An opportunity missed... - By: Mr. M. T. Kay, 28 Aug 2010
Here was a chance to followin the mould of the excellent recent Beatles remasters The Beatles In Mono & cast a spotlight on what many believe to be the Stones' finest hour.

Unfortunately, it just doesn't make the grade. I am sure that this album will sound great to many people listening to it through an iPod or computer speakers. There is nothing wrong with this, as it is a great album & should be enjoyed by many.

However, this is a review of the vinyl, & assuming that most people buying it will be listening through the requisite hi-fi equipment, it simply just does not cut it.

There are many reviews on line by people far more qualified than myself (see Michael Fremer, for example) so I will not repeat the points that they make about the flat, lifeless mastering that completly nullifies the drive & bite of the album. It just sounds so limp & neutered when compared to Bob Ludwig's CD on Virgin, or the original Artisan pressing.

It is a real shame, as the pressing is excellent & has no surface noise whatsoever (at least not to my ears). There is still a large following of people (myself included) who would love the opportunity to get hold of a good quality, clean vinyl copy that retains the dynamism & attitude of the original mix.

If you own any of the Abko Rolling Stones vinyl remasters, this will sorely disappoint. Even the sleeve reproduction is poor. I cannot help but feel that this is a real missed opportunity.

ouch! - By: Chris Lumb, 26 Aug 2010
I don't own any Stone's music but went for this having read some favourable reviews. After ten minutes I reached for the pain killers & after another ten contemplated suicide. The most excruciating, piercing top end treble coupled with a detached mid-range & a boomy base. The vocals , if that is what they were, were dire. This is not music, it is a group of instruments clattering away all on their own with somebody yelling incomprehensible mouthingsin the background. I thought I would do my daughterin law, who is something of a fan of this group, a favour by offering her the CD gratis. Having listened to it for less time than I spent, she unsurprisingly politely declined my offer.
rolling in exile - By: sgt wilson, 26 Aug 2010
I have always loved the stones, just below the Beatles, who are sacred to me.
As a 53 year old i can remember seeing both bands on Top Of The Pops most weeks
it seemed.
Any way Exile on Maine Street is a killer of an album, each stone lives up to their role, good old
Keith laid back smacked out,Mick with his trade mark over the top vocals, and fake southern blues
accent.Mick Taylor providing graceful solos, this being the one & only time the Stones had a decent lead guitar
since Brian Jones died.
The songs lurch from cod Gosple to Country, via some kick arse rock & roll, just what you wood expect from the stones, and its all up served with some strange voodoo, brewed upin a ex Nazi cellerin the South of France. Great stuff. No need to list all the tracks here ,just listen to the darn thing ,it does "just what it says on the packet". Oh & bye the way the bonus disc is worth the price alone.
Exile on Main Street (Deluxe Edition - Includes 12 Page Booklet) - By: P. Hussey, 20 Aug 2010
I had this album on cassette & i also had the first remastered version on C.D. when it came out. When the Rolling Stones web sites & newspapers reported that they had found some extra material then it got my interest. I dont usually purchase remastered albums unless they have something to offer & this does have a lot to offer.
Evenin its original form this is the Rolling Stones at their very best. All aspects of music are covered here great rock, gospel, country & even a touch of soul. From the first track "Rocks Off" with its great opening riff to the last track "Soul Survivor" every track is brilliant. Jaggers voice is shown off at its very best. The guitars of Richards & Taylor knit together brilliantly. All this is backed up by the engine room of Wyman & Watts. Also there is the brilliant piano sound of Nicky Hopkins a brilliant rock pianist who passed away too soon. Bobby Keys adds his special sound on the sax.
Its hard to believe that "Tumbling Dice" a track played at every Stones show since 1972 was the only Top 10 track to be lifted off this album. One of my favourite tracks is the underated "Let it Loose"
On to the extra tracks "Plundered my Soul" gained a lot of air play but "Following the River" is my personal favourite. Hard to believe these tracks were left off the original double album.
However if im being very critical then the new booklet is a let down. However i wonder why when the Stones remastered the rest of their back catalogue they didnt do a proper job like they have done with "Exile".
Probably one of the Top 10 Albumsin Rock History. It gained the No1 slot 38 years after its original release & deservedly so. I recommend you get yourself a copy.
An all time great. - By: MR K J DOWNING, 16 Aug 2010
Raw, ragged, grungy & undeniably superb, 'Exile on Main Street' is the Stones' best album by a way & although it's not stocked up with big hits, the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. An essential purchase for rock fans.
