Autechre goes full circle !! - By: Tec-know, 25 Apr 2010
After the weirdness & abstract almost completely bereft of musical ideas from previous 4 albums released after LP5 (which was good) - Oversteps finally goes full circle back to there workin the 90's. Their sound now reverted much more towards ambient-electronica, but, still pushing IDM with complexity. Some tracks like will jog your brain with memories of previous albums: Amber/Tri Repetae/Lp5; while still bringing new complex melody sounds & structure to the music...This is the perfect album that should have followed LP5.

The direction of this record immediately
reminded me of boards of canada's third album. Not because they
sound anything like each other, but because there is a much warmer
and more accessible sound relative to much of their previous output.
People who like Autechre also like a challenge, & the danger
here as that the listener could begin to lose interestin it fairly
quickly. It sounds on this record like they have tried to merge their
more difficult output with Amber & Tri Repetae. For example, on some
tracks like seeonesee the melodies are slowly deconstructed, &
picked apart, before collapsing together again.
I particularly like the variety of tracks, & my personal favourite
is Stepreo - there is no tune to speak of, it just sounds great. If
there is an issue, it is that too many tracks seem to meander aimlessly
without going anywhere or warming to the theme (0=0) , although there are
no painfully long tracks. I've listened to it a lot & i haven't lost
interest yet - this is largely a successful record, where they have
got the balance quite nicely.
good return - By: Minky Starshine, 07 Apr 2010
Yes I agree it's definatly one of their best for awhile now..I've owned all Autechre's albums, but only retain 3 having sold the others off due to extreme noise terror..the 3 I now have are their first one,tri repeate++ & oversteps....this album really draws you in,and by the end you feel like you've been sucked into a really complex set of sounds & tunes...it's not a tri repeate but it ain't too far..still think their best tracks are Drone from the peel sessions & the remix of Lamb's Gold...
A return to form - By: ESP, 01 Apr 2010
For me, Autechre reached a creative peak with `Confield' & `Draft 7.30'. The albums before, starting with the earliest works, were just steps on the road to achieving what I believe Autechre will be remembered forin the years to come. Those two albums were like nothing else I'd heard before. `Untilted' was good, but not as good & I felt that `Quaristice', with the exception of a few good moments, was disappointing. So I assumed that they had pretty much had their day & that `oversteps' was going to be yet another indication that Booth & Brown were probably thinking about retirement. I couldn't have been more wrong & surprised. It isn't `Confield' - there's no generative, constructive/deconstructive methods that I can hear. Indeed, sonically, there is little of the alien sound-scapes of `Confield' or `Draft 7.30'. Yet it is unmistakably Autechre - challenging, clever & brilliant. If I had to choose a previous Autechre album that it reminded me of it would be `LP5'. It's clear that Booth & Brown have a lot more to offer, & I for one am very pleased with that.
I'm through with Autechre - By: David Bass, 22 Mar 2010
After waiting impatiently for this CD hoping it would match the sublime moments of Amber & parts of Tri Repetae I was yet again disappointed. For me Autechre have had their day. I find most of the tracks on Oversteps underwhelming with some just downright irritating (The synth soundin track 3 is for me just too painful to listen to. Most of the other tracks sound muffled & noodly, offering very little musical interest. After reading a lot of Autechre reviews it seems as though almost all of their fans are chasing the few moments of electronic genius which was sprinkled over their first few CD's. It is a sad day but I don't think I can be bothered to give them the benefit of the doubt & keep getting so disappointed.
