A Band For Britain - By: Graham R. Miles, 02 Jul 2010
This British Band from South Yorkshire is one of only about 700 brass bands still activein Great Britain. 35 years ago there were over 35,000, many disappearing with the British governments pit closure policyin the 1990s. The mines had to close & with it came the demise of many of the brass bands.
This group survived thanks to a 3 part BBC TV doco leading to a record deal with Universal, according to writer Ashley Studdalin the latest "Journal Into Melody" magazine of the Robert Farnon Society.
This CD contains a good variety of selections from a stirring rendition of Robert Browne Hall's "Death Or Glory" to the theme from "Pirates of the Caribbean".
Many of the key players are women including principal cornet Sally Bannan, flugel horn Penny Brookes & other players including Michelle Bowater, April Farthing, Elizabeth Hartley, Samantha Boden-Hook, Kay Brookes, Philipa Hobbs & Jess Marshal. So many female playersin one band is highly unusual to my way of thinking.
The playing is superb, but the program is short with only 37 minutes of music. An hour or so would have made the CD better value.
Definitely a Band For Britain - By: N. MCGREGOR EDWARDS, 12 May 2010
Given the distressed & TV origins of the present Dinnington Colliery Band I feared that this CD might be a worthy buy to support the band but a bit short on quality. Not a bit of it - they produce a wonderful sound which makes them a real joy to listen to. No doubt about it - this IS a Band For Britain. My only slight concern is that on my copy, the bass is a little bit heavy but that apart, it is a first class band. Brass band aficionados will not be disappointed
Brass Band - By: Mrs. S. J. Stock, 08 May 2010
this record is great ,I really enjoy listening to brass band music although never expected to before I watched the series. I was a little disappointed that more of the more recent tunes shown on the show weren't included. But overall a fantastic CD
