Out of Africa / America - By: Leonardo27, 27 Oct 2009
Taking a break from his acclaimed Little Axe blues / dub project, veteran musician Skip McDonald teams up with rising West African star Daby Toure for an uplifting mini album that showcases their diverse talents well. African, American & African/French influences are brought to the boilin a satisfying, if ultimately a rather laid-back, musical stew.
McDonald reworks two old Little Axe tracks: 'Time Has Come' from his debut album 'Wolf That House Built' (1994) but virtually unrecognisable from the original, & 'Sinners' from 2004's 'Champagne & Grits'. Both benefit greatly from the new treatment.
Daby Toure has a fine voice that at times positively soars heavenward, whilst the three songs composed by him reveal him to be a songwriter to be reckoned with too. "Past Time" with its strong cross-cultural influences is the pick of the tracks, but the quality threshold throughout is generally high.
Why they stopped at a six track mini album instead of going the whole way is anybody's guess, but hopefully this isn't the end of a fascinating collaboration.
