A Pleasant Enough Collection of Largely Ballad-Style Songs, but with Little Musical Energy - By: Mr. Laurence Williams, 30 Jul 2010
I first heard Katie Melua when she performed her latest single 'The Flood' live on the TV a couple of months ago & was struck by the pureness of her voice & unusual/energy-filled performance. As a result I was prompted to give her music a bit more of a listen to so got this compilation of her debut work - I found the songs on this CD to be quite different to the style of 'The Flood'.
The Flood
Her singing voice is just as good, but none of the songs particularly gripped me & there was an overall of them all being a bit too similar; the accompanying music is often quite non-descript, does not do much to promote the song & I would be hard-pressed to identify any 1 track from listening to a clip. The only track on the CD which I particularly enjoyed was 'Closest Thing To Crazy'; it would appear this is the 'star track' as it is the first on the playlist; things slowly slide downwards from there, but without anything being unlistenable. Everything is pleasant enough, but the tracks are all ballad-style with little variationin pacein any one song or indeed of any of the songs on offer; this could be a fault of what was picked to go onto this compilation of course, so I cannot say if all her music from her earlier years is just as, I'm sorry to say, boring. If you listen to 'The Flood' you will notice several distinct sections of differing pace, rhythm & tone - these variations are absentin this earlier selection of work...
You certainly get a lot for your money with a second disc being a DVD featuring a 90min live concert performance of hers, but it would seem my lack of stimulation for the music was reflected by the audience at that concert, as they exhibit very little energy & all appear to be only a one level of consciousness above being comatose !
So, my expectations about the music of Katie Melua were slightly dashed by 'The Katie Melua Collection', but as I can recognise a definite talentin her singing I may well be tempted to get her latest album, which features 'The Flood',in the hope that the remaining tracks are as similarly engrossing as that song - & different to her earlier work as presented on this compilation CD !

Jolly Enjoyable - By: Nigel Groves, 16 Jul 2010
It's great & the bonus DVD is exactly that, not necessary coz the CD is great on it's own, but some tasty gravy all the same. Duet with Eva Cassidy is a treasure, so pleased just to have thatin my collection. Love it.
