Breathtaking debut. - By: Mr. J. A. Brown, 25 Jul 2008
This wonderful record surpassed all my expectations i built up after listening to their record with Jenny Lewis. It's far softer than i was expecting, but what a lovely slice of Americana.
From the whispery opening of "How am i to be", to the enrapturing "Waves" you know you've been treated to something special.
Buy this album if you enjoyed the Rabbit Fur Coat, or just buy it. You owe it to yourself.
tight little album - By: MICHAEL MCVEY, 24 Jul 2008
bought this album on the strength of 'Rabbit Fur Coat' the album done with the lassie from Rilo Kiley which came out a few years ago. As well as a interview done by one of the twins & a preview of a couple of the tracks on the Guy Garvey show on BBC6. Anyway i have not been disappointed, faultless singing from both of the twins, & tight instrumentation, make this a very worthwhile purchase.
A promising debut long-player... - By: IWFIcon, 13 Jul 2008
Two years on, I still don't know which one of the Watson Twins it was that I met properly. Butin a way, that just makes it all the more "hilarious" doesn't it?
Anyway, now that Jenny Lewis has gone back to Rilo Kiley, it's finally time for the Twins to properly step into the spotlight, with Fire Songs, their debut album. Their collaboration with Lewis on Rabbit Fur Coat (an album which no less an authority than my father said was "morbid beyond belief") led to a certain amount of expectation for their full-length debut but it was also difficult to gauge just what an impact they could have on their own.
At first, the over-riding impression is one that they are better suited to backing singers than front women. For the first couple of songs, at least, they arein danger of fading into the background of their own songs; not a good sign.
But things do start to pick up with their cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven & from that point on there are more hits than misses. Map To Where You Are is a slinky number, which to me sounds like it's from the soundtrack of some spaghetti western (I mean thatin a good way), Sky Open Up is an atmospheric belter & Bar Woman Blues may sound like a typical MOR 1970's throwback...but bloody hell it's a good MOR 1970's throwback.
I think the criticism that The Watson Twins at times get lost on their own record is, sadly, a fair onein parts & there's nothing on here that matches up to the best cuts on their record with Jenny Lewis, but it remains a very promising debut & certainly leaves you hoping that you haven't heard the last of the Watson Twins
Well worth waiting for. - By: A. Hill, 26 Jun 2008
Loved the Watson Twins on Jenny Lewis' record, & have been waiting for their own record with anticipation. Caught them at the 12 Bar recently & loved them live too. Fire Songs is a great debut full length album. My favourite tracks have got to be the opener "How Am I To Be" & the brilliant Cure cover "Just Like Heaven". I hope they come back to tour soon.
