Great voice, but material nothing new. - By: Lillie2374, 01 Sep 2008
I bought this after my 7 year old kept playing 'No Air' over & over again & it got me singing along. I guessed the rest of the album would be good.
I don't dislike it as such, but I'm not keen either. There is no denying she has talent, great looks & a beautiful voice, but I am just so sick & tired of hearing young artists singing about how the world has let them downin love &in a few of her songs, she was the same.
Having said that, I am a very upbeat person & I like music to lift me & make me want to dance to happy lyrics, so maybe I am not best to commment. I don't want to hear about someone being hurt, destroyed, upset, left alone, crying, heartbroken etc. It's whiney & annoying & it does nothing that music is supposed to do, lift spirits & make you smile. I'm not saying all her songs are like that, but I've listened to other albums & the first time I've played them, they have grabbed me & made me want to keep listening. This however, did not!
In fact, I don't even know where my copy is.
Great voice, shame about the angst from such a young girl. Save it for Oprah!!!
Fresh, fairly innovative and definitely diverse! - By: Sam, 30 Jun 2008
This album is such a good buy, because of the mixture of songs on it, but at the same time has a mainstream vibe running through every one-the songs on the album are extremely well written & produced & it seems to me that time & money have been thrown at this album & with the talented Jordin Sparks at the helm it has been an utter success:
1.Tattoo-Catchy & definitely mainstream pop; not the best song on the album, but it is a great opener. 9/10
2.One Step At A Time-Has an R&B flavour to it & a great beat. 8/10
3.No Air-An ansolutely fantastic song-I'm no fan of duets, but this is outstanding vocally & lyrically. 10/10
4.Freeze-This song adds yet another dimension to the albuma kinda electronified ballad; its hard to describe, but its a great song. 9/10
5.Shy Boy-This has definitely crossed into R&B & the result is a classy song, which is another welcome change from what has preceeded. 8/10
6.Now You Tell Me-One of my favourites; a classy, poppy ballad. 10/10
7.Next To You-This sounds like it could've been sung by JoJo; this is good, but weaker than many of the other songs. 7/10
8.Just For The Record-I absolutely love this ballad & it is soooo catchy! 10/10
9.Permanent Monday-A brilliant song, which begins low & subtle & the chorus transforms it into a powerful & rocky ballad. 10/10
10.Young And In Love-Another changein direction back to the electronica style track. My only qualm with this track is that it could be anyone singing & doesn't really sound like Jordin all that much... 8/10
11.See My Side-A strange & different song; not my favourite. 7/10
12.God Loves Ugly-A bit of a soppy ending to the album. 6/10
13.As cheesy, totally generic songs go I absolutely love this one. There is something really great about it. 10/10
Amazing Album - By: C. Jones, 03 Jun 2008
Bought this album purely on 'Tattoo', but got to say that the whole album is great. Not a duff songin there at all. Go buy it......
Beautiful! Give it a try. - By: Mrs. Janis Ashton, 22 May 2008
Don't be afraid to buy this debut album, it definately won't disapoint. Lovely melodys with beautiful lyrics that compliments Jordin's angelic voice. It is a nice mix of R n B & pop. A real breath of fresh air!
Sparks smolders - By: Amanda Richards, 23 Mar 2008
... & by "smolders" I mean that she glows & is smokin' hot, but thanks to some damp material she falls just short of igniting the fiery album I was expecting.
Pretty, bubbly, young, a great performer & with an amazing voice, Jordin Sparks nails some winnersin this album, which already has three hits under its belt:
1. This is My Now - the song she sang to take the American Idol title from Blake Lewis (Granted, he was at a disadvantage due to not being able to change up the song to better suit his style)
2. Tattoo - Definitely mainstream pop, a catchy song geared towards radio & television saturation. (I still like it) Co-written by Sparks.
3. No Air - Hot, hot song with hottie Chris Brown (need I say more?)
Other songs to look out for:
One Step at a Time - An upbeat, funky song, well suited to her voice
Now You Tell Me - An ideal pop song for an Idol graduate
Next to You - Mid tempo song carried by the chorus
Just For the Record - Another mainstream pop song
Not that hot:
"Freeze" - Self-explanatory. She sings well, but it's not a really good song. Co-written by Sparks
"Shy Boy", "See My Side", "God Loves Ugly" - Monotonous
"Permanent Monday", "Young & In Love" -Unmemorable
This debut album proves that Sparks has the voice to soar to greater heights, but she needs some edgier material to push her above the rest of the mainstream crowd.
