If there was a 'problem' with the original New Forms it was that although it opened a lot of new doors for the drum'n'bassy side of electronic music, it rarely if ever broke out into full-on actual drum'n'bass. It was more jazzy & abstract, often having stretches of build up that would lead into more build up, then kind of nothing... These new 're-licks' are effectively VIP remixes of the originals & they all sound designed for the dancefloor, rather than the headphones/beard-stroking room. For example 'Brown Paper Bag' is transformed from a monolithic 9-minute prog-jazz freakout, to 4 minutes of punchy jump-up (complete with an MC), but it still retains its weird, dark edginess. Likewise, if the original of 'Heroes' was a bit too downtempo & melancholy, here it is turned a pulsating, shimmering head-nodder, & is all the better for it. In fact every track from the original disc seems to have been put through a drum'n'bass blender, & pretty much every one of them comes out smelling of Lynx Java (in a good way). There are also 4 brand new tracks included, the best of which, 'Less Is More', has a funky "70's cop" kind of vibe to it. Unfortunately one of the other new tracks 'Don't Hold Back' lets the album down a bit with it's nasty Pendulum-esque anthemic 'rock' feel...fortunately it's under 3 minutes long. As with the original New Forms, this 2008 revamped version concludes with 'Destination' which once again is turned from an "almost"-D'n'B track into a bona-fide drum'n'bass classic, & is better than the original. There's other stuff I wanted to point out but that would mean an even longer review, basically this CD is really good & a definite purchase for any D'n'B fan. 4.5/*****
On old favourite with an edgy update - By: B. Remy, 17 May 2008
I heard thisin a record store & I knew it was New Forms, but not as I knew it. I had to go & ask what it was because I thought I was going a bit crazy that it was so familiar yet had all these extra sounds that I'd never heard before. If you love New Forms (the original) this is an exciting update & doesn't disappoint. New Forms is still brilliant, but this one has more layers, new baselines & textures - & it sounds great. I'm not sure I would have bought it, had I not heard it, but it is very very good.
