Consistently Impressive - By: A. McKenna, 13 May 2010
This was the first CD of Karine's that I bought, & after a couple of listens immediately bought 'Faultlines' & 'Scribbled In Chalk'. I think most artists must only dream of producing three consecutive albums of such quality. Each has a slightly differnt feel & there is little to choose between them. 'Painted it White' & 'Sorry' are personal favourites along with 'Firethief' which is, for me the standout trackin a quality collection. If you like Karine's earlier work then 'This Earthly Spell' should sit comfortably alongside.
Beautiful album - By: TingMart, 27 Mar 2010
No let upin the quality of K.P's writing arranging & singing.Lyrics sometimes surprising & challenging, sometimes whimsical & touching.
She weaves a heavenly spell - By: Geoff Hall, 09 Oct 2009
Like others, I am a big fan of Karine Polwart and, admittedly, biased; but I particularly like this album because her great voice, singing fantastic songs, is complimented by her backing band. It's a fuller production, slightly heavier than before, but still true to the folk tradition. Does that really matter? Not really, as it's great music.

He songs are intelligent, some serious, others a little lighter, but always beautifully sung by Karine (with that blissful Scots brogue) & played by her band whose backing vocals are - well - quite glorious.

She goes from strength to strength - & I love her albums to bits. Yes, she castes a heavenly spell on me.
Earthly spellbound - By: R. A. Johnson, 11 Aug 2009
This is a glorious album. The fact that it is different from her previous work should be taken to indicate not a retreat but a development. The folk flavour is still strong, the arrangements rich, lyrics sharp ("Oh to be, oh to be a liar" she sings wistfullyin the final track) & her voice beguiling as ever. I liked it the first time I heard it but it grew with every play. Don't grumble it's not folk enough, appreciate the beauty!
An incredible talent - By: Mr. N. J. Harding, 15 May 2009
First up a confession, I am huge fan of Karine. I really think she has something specialin terms of musical talent, however if you are going to review a record it is only fair to the people that may read that review it to be balanced & honest...so here we go...

This is her masterpiece, all the promise of `Fautlines' & `Scribbledin chalk' come home to roostin this album. I mean `Daisy' is a terrific singalong & I love it when played live but it is hardly `Bohemian Rhapsody'!

`This Earthly Spell' is full of wonderful imaginative songs from the up lifting `Rivers Run' about her young son to the anti war `Better Things'. This is no an easy record, `Firethief' originally recorded for the BBC Radio Ballads about living with HIV & AIDs is genuinely harrowing but delivered with such compassion that you cannot fail to be moved.

The production throughout is fautless with Karine's voice always placed correctlyin the mix. As has become usual, Inge Thomson provides some splendid percussion & accordion throughout.
