Stereo! - By: John Slater, 21 Sep 2008
I had the vinyl version of this album. It is by far the best Rolling Stones collection on the market. This CD release is no disappointment. The sound quality is superb. I can add little to other reviews, with one exception. This was the only place that I knew the stereo version of "Paint it Black" to be. I can confirm that this reissue still has the "Paint it Black" trackin stereo, which was a major reason for me buying this collection for another time.
I agree with a previous reviewer who says that this is a much better collection than "Hot Rocks." This is a much better collection & better sound quality.
Correct me if I'm wrong please - By: Bill Peter, 31 Dec 2007
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a vague recollection of hearing track one, "Come On", debut on Ready Steady , Go. Since then, I've been a fan of "early" Stones, previously compiled on what was the "London Sessions", but may have been renamed. It was good, & this is equally good. I guess the record company is maximising on re-issues before their fifty years is up. Then , presumably, we'll all be able to buy it all again for 99pin Woolworth's.
The only Stones album you'll need - By: Cupid Stunt, 30 Nov 2007
The Stones are now sad, crusty old stadium rockers who just don't know when to call it a day & should probably have retiredin the 70's when Brian Jones died. But they did make some blinding music & the legend that was 'The Beatles & The Stones' really is justified. While not their best song, to me Mother's Little Helper sums them up as the talented "oddly tuned" guitar band with distinctive, satisfying lyrics & a cheeky sense of fun.
If you like The Rolling Stones you will already have all these tracks, that is a simple fact of life about all compilations. If you've never owned any of their albums though & you've heard Paint It Black on a film soundtrack or She's a Rainbow on the advert with the plastacine bunnies & thought they were good then this is the ultimate CD for you.
My Dad had the 1975 vinyl version of Rolled Gold & so I grew up with it. You may therefore say I'm showing nostalgic bias but I've tried all their albums & I hope you'll believe me when I say that this is as good as they ever got. Some 'experts' say Exile On Main Street was their best album but for me they stopped making good music after Sticky Fingers & so this updated version, now not only encompassing the best songs from that album but also their best songs from previous years which weren't originally includedin Rolled Gold, is indeedin my opinion the best Stones album there is.
I'm not sure where a previous reviewer got the idea that Stairway To Heaven was on here though, perhaps he's got The Stones confused with Rolf Harris!
Wow! - By: Fire Horse, 07 Nov 2007
Having read the Amazon summary of this CD set which lists the contents as containing Stairway To Heaven, I can hardly wait. I've never heard the Stones' version of this Led Zeppelin classic.
Best Stones compilation - By: Paddy Penpusher, 03 Nov 2007
Still far & away the best overview of the Stones' music from the days when the Stones mattered. A welcome re-release despite what others say.
