Customer Reviews

I am thoroughly impressed... - By: Thomas Thomsen, 02 Jul 2008
It's interesting reading all these other reviews, which tend to be either very positive or very negative. How anyone can possibly be the slightest bit disappointed with Long Road Out Of Eden is beyong me. To me this is one of their strongest releases & damn impressive. Some complain about its length, & that some of these songs shouldn't have been included, but apart from the cover of the dull Guilty Of The Crime I certainly do not agree. Others complain that some of the ballads are too soft & sentimental, but that was always a part of the Eagles sound (The Best Of My Love, I Can't Tell You Why, etc.), so - again! - I don't agree. I wouldn't want to be without Do Something (excellent), You Are Not Alone (very pretty melody) or I Don't Want To Hear Any More. The folk ballad Center Of The Universe gives me goosebumbs - I think it is by far their most beautiful ballad alongside After The Thrill Is Gone (1975). The title track is another favorite: The guitar solo puts a lumpin my throat & reminds you why these guys are still up there with the very bestin the music business. I could go on & on about these songs (Frail Grasp On The Big Picture, Business As Usual, etc.) - they really are THAT good. If like me you were very apprehensive about Long Road Out Of Eden based on the four, very bland, new songs they recorded for Hell Freezes Over, then do NOT worry. The Eagles are BACK, & they are OUTSTANDING. Every time I am listening to Long Road Out Of Edenin one sitting, by the time I get to the end of it, I am thoroughly impressed & really rather overwhelmed & touched by the fact that they have managed to make such a superior comeback after all these years. Higly recommended!
Its not bad.. - By: Colin Henser, 02 Jun 2008
I'm not a huge fan of the eagles but there stuff does impress me. The long road out of eden does however have its flaws, being a double disc means enevitably there are going to be "filler tracks". This is certainly the case here & while none of the tracks are bad you get the feeling on some tracks needed that tad more effort. My next point is the most important however & no doubt will get a lot of fans a bit riled up but I have to say it. Any band that is going to put out a double disc album has to make the listener feel the album needed both discs, &in my opinion this album does not. I think the album would have benefited much more from a single disc of the best of the two. Despite these things, the album does have some standout moments & some great song, my favourite being the epic title track opening disc 2. It may be 10 minutes long but the song is fabulous & seems overin a flash. Overall the album is a good listen, certainly more suited to the established eagles fan but good nevertheless
Fantastic eclectic music - By: lmhh, 01 Jun 2008
As a fan of Hotel California, Desperado etc but not an Eagles afficionado I wasn't sure what to expect from this album but I love it. The styles constantly switch from the folksy "No More Walksin the Wood" to the boyband sound of "What will I do with my heart" to the truly rocky title track to the almost mariachi "It's your world now" & each is musically superb. The other thing I really like about the album is that even though many of the songs have downbeat lyrics whether referring to lost love or to global themes the music always lifts you so it isn't depressing. Been playing itin my car non-stop for a month & I am still not bored!
Well, I think it's great, for what that's worth - By: lerusty, 21 May 2008
I am a little reticent about writing a review when so many others have already blown their hot air. So I will be brief.

I bought this album with low to middle expectations but I was very pleasantly surprised. I think this album is a cracker. Fantastic, quality musicianship. Mature song writing. Some outstanding songs & nothing that is weak. Radio-friendly ballads along with social commentary & proper lyrics rather than the meaningless trash often written these days.

One of the best albums of the 21st century.
Overdue for retirement - By: Peter Clark, 28 Apr 2008
If I had written this shortly after buying it I would have given it two of three starsin the hope that it would improve on further listening. That has not been the case. It has got progressively worse. It may be my taste but the joy that came throughin their earlier Albums (including the best, Desperado) is completely lacking here. For comparison with another elderly rocker, listen to J J Cale - now that's what I call music.
