Genius utter genius - By: Ianham, 17 Mar 2008
I have reviewed the box set already, but I thought this little gem deserved an extra pat on the back. Robyn displays a knack of tackling styles that shouldn't work. Of particular note is the Watersons meet Bonzos "Uncorrected Personality Traits" & the Five Blind Boys of Croydon "Furry Green Atom Bowl".
The piano has deliberate echoes of Satie & the whole CD has a certain bleak autumnal mist to it. That said I played the LP all year round & fine it is tooin Spring, Summer or Winter.
For all Robyn uses his heroes as a stepping stone, Syd, Dylan, Lennon, Dame Kiri Tikanowa (ok so I made the last one up) - he adds much much more of himself. Few writers are more of themselves than Robyn whatever his detractors might say.
The extras are just that - the LP was perfectin itself & the additional songs are nice to have. Me, I tend to thinkin LP's worth of material - around 40 mins give or take. But as I say, nice to have something extra.
Buy with confidence.
I commend this CD to the house.
