What can I say? I DO love to boogie! - By: Ms. E. Bush, 24 Feb 2008
I must say, these past reviews make a very interesting read, particulary Mr Dooley's impertinent rant. I amin favour of all the people who have commented about what this Welshman has to say, we are supposed to be reviewing Bolan's music, not his lifestyle. I would be most suprised if this Arthur man was able to control his ego if he was subject to the same success that Bolan had. In Bolan's defence, I would like to point out thatin the summer of 76, Bolan had slimmed down (though I fail to see why we should metion his weight) & released 'I Love to Boogie' one of my all time favorite songs. Marc Bolan was a fantastic songwriter & musician whose music has brought me through my childhood & into my teenage years.
Not heard it yet! - By: Mr. K. Hubbard, 12 Oct 2007
Having read the long review below that criticises Mark's life, rather than the music, I think I'll get this CD. After all, Clinton was/is probably not much of a husband, but he was one hell of a good president. Shame he got so bogged downin the morass of his own libido. The other thing, of course, is that if you're a happy clappy type of person, you'll never ever do anything creative. It takes a typically tortured soul to bring a bit of genius into our lives. Being a mess might not have been much fun for Marc, & the same goes for all those other mixed-up artists out there, but one thing is for sure. As far as his music goes, Marc was one of our greats, & this looks like a stonkingly good compilation. If it gets one more bad review, I'll definitely buy it, despite having a couple of his compilations already.
Oh, & as an aside, if anyone gets anything published, be it music or writing or whatever, then that person is putting himself up for being reviewed. So, the fact I might not be able to play a single note on a guitar doesn't mean that I can't say what I think of an guitarist's output. After all, we're the punters who are going to buy the artist's stuff, so our ability play musicin our own rightin no way undermines our right & ability to criticise the output of those who do. Reviewing someone's work is not competitive, we're not saying we can do it better ... we're just saying the artist himself could have done it better, or should have done it better, if he was going to put it out to the public.
all that matters is the music . - By: S. B. Singleton, 11 Oct 2007
You know, some people can sit there & give their egos a good massage by writing smart ass reviews , those people are very good at slagging people off . i say to those people , "where is your great body of work ? where is your number one album ? & just who the f8ck are you ?" Marc was a true star a total one off ,a great writer , musician , performer, and artist his music will live onin the heart & mind .I love Marc x
MARC BOLAN - By: ijhopkinson, 25 Sep 2007
MARC BOLAN made some wonderful musicin the seventies....the criticism below is largely unfounded...you should remember that he diedin 77 & so had no chance to turn his career around. Who knows what he would have achieved if he had lived?
All that glitters is not gold ! - By: Arthur Dooley, 23 Sep 2007
Without doubt,Marc Bolan through his T Rex incarnation produced some classic early 70's pop tracks. Jeepster,Ride a white swan,Hot Love, Get it on,to name but a few.
Unfortunately, despite being driven by a cosmically inclined super-ego & single mindedly pursuing fame & stardom as if it were the holy grail. The grail when it came within his hands became something of a poisoned chalice. Bolan's creative well ran dry remarkably quickly for someone who had reached the pinnacle of his professionin the early 70's. Within a few short years he had become a chubby pastiche of his former self making comically pretentious records & appearing on children's television with record sales...like his credibility...disappearing into a downward spiralling vortex !
His tragic premature death if anything restored his credibility & gave his life & work an aura of respectability.
Today, through films like Billy Elliot & re-releases such as this,a new young audience are being drawn to Marc Bolan & his timeless, infectious, three minute slices of hippy-trippy life all laid down with sharp instrumental hooks & riffs & wrapped upin weirdly wonderful lyrics.
Anyone who has read John Peel's autobiography will come to grasp Bolan's sad grasp on reality & a revealing superficiality which saw him become a fragile & vulnerable has-been almost as soon as veneration had knocked on the door.
He was for a few short years a classic pop/rock star & creator of more than one or two memorable pop singles. In a way,it's sad that by the time he died, his best creative days were well beyond him & the future could have been cruel & unkind to such an egotistical but fragile man who brought pleasure to millions.
