The Best Score of the Year! - By: , 15 Nov 2000
Quite frankly, I've never heard of James Newton Howard- until now. I had high expectations, but I was bowled over by the maturity of the score & the way it complimented the animated feature, breathing life & emotion into moving pixels. This is not your typical Disney soundtrack. From the beautifully timid opening track "Inner Sanctum/The Nesting Grounds" to the full-blown orchestral "Raptors/Stand Together" & "Across the Desert", Howard experimented with various styles & instruments, yet managed to retain a subtle underlying theme which finally bursts outin the final track, "Epilogue". His collaboration with Lebo M produced a kind of ethnical magic, most evidentin "The Courtship", but one which lingers throughout the album. If you love Hans Zimmer's The Lion King & John Williamsin the Star Wars saga & Jurassic Park, this is for you. Watch out for itin the Oscars! -Fahmi
It`s a Wonderfull Score - By: , 26 Oct 2000
This is the only score by Howard I am owning, but it is a wonderfull one. I especially like the primitive, african rhytms & choral works on it,to not speak about the massive orchestra of Raptors/Stand Together which is probably the best action track on the score. The first eight tracks introduces new themesin each one except track 5 & six. In the first track, the beautifull introduction theme is heard,to be followed by the majestic main themein second track. Track nr 4 introduces the lemurs`theme - a glad, life is like a circus theme. And there is also the wonderfull "Stand Toigether" theme, often with orchestra & chorus. Some tracks, such as Across the Desert & Breakoutare entirly different from the rest of the score & are of high quality. And it has also a frightening theme, first heardin "The Carnotaur Attack",a theme for the giant carnotaurs, which reminds a little bit of the Jaws Theme. I could tell you that this is the best Disney Scoire ever, and even if you`re not a Disney fan you can buy this, because it is a score of the same quality as Williams`s Jurassic Park or may be better.
