Elkie lacks passion in the studio. - By: H. M. Brown, 08 Mar 2007
I've always loved Elkie's voice & know that with the right song she can always turnin a great performance. I also love traditional blues & jazz & have been a fan of this kind of music since I first came across Bessie Smith thirty years ago. However, I find these performances lack the kind of passion I would have expected Elkie to have for these particular songs. It isn't a bad album by any means but this vehicle steers too close to the middle of the road for my liking. Perhaps, it would have been better if it had been recorded Livein concert.
Forty years on - By: Mr. C. Whitehead, 15 Feb 2006
The sleeve to this CD talks about Elkie & Humph doing a forces tourin Germanyin 1965. I saw that show -in Munster - Humph was Humph - as good then as he is today - Elkie was brand new to the business at 17. And 40 years on they record this simply brilliant album together; not before time. Lets hope its not another 40 before the next one. The arrangements, Elkies singing - the whole thing is very special - Buy & enjoy.
