Having heard the track "The Islander" I thought I would love this, even though Tarja's vocals would be missing from the album. I didn't. Annette's voice is not just different, it isn't particularly good - unless she hasn't been allowed to let it fly. The lyrical quality has been lost from all but the two folky tracks. Whether you like it will depend on what you liked about Nightwish before. If it was that great, soaring operatic, symphonic quality that gave us tracks such as Down with the Sun, then get Tarja's solo album "My Winter Storm". If it was the harder stuff, then probably you'll love it.

This is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. Since I laid my hands on it, I could not stop listening to it. The album really gets better every time you listen to it. Every song is special, & The Islander is fantastic. The whole album works coherently to give something special, the lyrics, the music, & also the vocals, which for me did not fail to be really good with Nightwish's new singer. Cannot wait to see what Nightwish will come up with next, but if it is any where as good as this, then it will be a winner.
More please - By: Dylan, 04 Jul 2008 This was the first Nightwish I had heard - I readin many reviews about the last singer & how wonderful she was - personally I really like the sound of this one! I have since bought an earlier album & can't see what all the fuss was about, I could listen to Dark Passion Play over & over -in fact I do, but not the earlier stuff. I guess we all like different sounds, but for me, this album does it.
Nightwish's Best CD EVER! - By: jennythemusicmaker, 02 Jul 2008 I've always been a fan of rock/metal bands such as Epica, Evanescance & Within Temptation, but I had oddly enough never heard of Nightwish. However, when I was bored one day, I found the video of Amaranth on youtube. I fellin love with the band straight away, & even though there has been loads of tension about Anette stepping in, I still prefer Dark Passion Play's music to their older styles.
So I bought the CD & have been completely blown away by the amazing quality of the songs. From the really heavy metal such as Master Passion Greed, to the more pop-like songs such as Amaranth & Bye Bye Beautiful, to songs influenced by folk music such as Last of the Wilds & The Islander, Nightwish have become my favourite band ever!
Anette's style has really created something new for the band & Marco is backin some of the songs creating variety & passion. Some songs are better than others but the ones that I didn't like that much have grown on me since then, & some such as 7 Days To The Wolves are nowin my Top 10 song list, but before I often skipped it because I didn't like it!
So if you're a great fan of Nightwish, or are just looking for something new, then you HAVE to buy this CD! In particular, the most memorable thing about Dark Passion Play is the 13 minute The Poet & The Pendulum song, which is one of the most incredible songs I have ever heard.
Nevermind about the whole "tension" involvedin Tarja being missed, Anette being "rubbish" etc - just BUY IT!!!
DPP - By: Ms. J. F. Webb, 25 Jun 2008 This is one of my most favorite albums! Nightwish are also my altime favorite bands! Like Everyone else i was unsure of new new singer annette & prefered tarja! But Annette has grown on me so much!! Could you imagine Tarja singing these songs on DPP? Me niether! The new sound is fantastic & refreshing! Of course my love for tarja will never die out!
I Also have seen nightwish this year & it was absolutly fantastic!!
For the Tarja Fans... Have you heard her new album, My Winter Storm?
