Perfect as usual - By: P. SACRE, 10 Nov 2008
I just want to add my voice to the crowd: Bonamassa is more than you expect. I have bought all his records now, & there is no disappointment, I am very very impressed with him: good voice, massive sound, an amazing knowledge of the classics of blues & rock, & a style of his own who can also perfectly emulate the great names when needed. He is fulfilling expectations coming from the hype around him. HE DESERVES IT. I have not been impressed as much with someone since Stevie Ray played Texas Floodin my ears many years ago. MUST HAVE FOR ALL BLUES FANS!! Not only this CD! ALL OF THEM !!!
An instant all-time favourite - By: J. Nolan, 05 Nov 2008
Every now & then, I stumble across an album that is of such a high calibre that it becomes an all-time favourite instantly. Sloe Gin is one such album.
I don't own any of Bonamassa's other work, but bought it off the strength of an Amazon review. I put it on, & 16 bars in, I knew I was going to love it. I can see how it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this is everything I love about music. Bonamassa is a superb guitarist, & there's a nice mix of acoustic stuff & dirtier distortion, sprinkled with some simply wonderful solos.
Listening to this album for the first time reminded me of the first time I listened to Eric Johnson's Venus Isle, & I mean that as the highest form of compliment.
Superb.
What a let-down - By: Mikey, 24 Oct 2008
I bought this album on the strength of the number of five star reviews it had been given & was seriously disappointed. My main gripe is that the album shouldn't bein the blues category - very misleading.
Joe is clearly a talented guitarist, & I'm sure this type of soft rock will appeal to a wide audience, but blues it most definitely is not.
Title Track is Ace & a great start to my day. - By: Bowie, 19 Oct 2008
Kept hearing this on the radio. So pleased that I bought it & no regrets. Put title track 'SLOE GIN' on repeat for about 10 mins while I make a coffeein kitchen. I often smile as it's a great start to my day.
Guitar Great in the Making! - By: Mark P, 25 Sep 2008
I recently picked up on Joe Bonnamassa & was well impressed with what I heard!.
For me , his style evokes a lot of the blues-rock greats of yesteryear who switched from acoustic to electric with equally great results, Rory Gallagher, Jimmy Page , also those from the "Power Trios" of the late 60's - early 70's - hello Cream , ZZ Top!.
The 70's blues-rock influences are muchin evidence, with covers from Bad Co , & John Martyn's "Easy Blues" , entitled " Jelly Roll " here, given an acoustic take ( yes , Martyn could rock out with the best of them , backin the day!) ,Bonnamassa also successfully covers Chris Whitley's 'Ball Peen Hammer' from the 90's , whatever happened to him?.
I love the version of "Black Night", which I have heard by Dr John & Buddy Guy among others over the years ,is reminscent of Led Zeppelin's " Since I've Been Loving You".The comparisons to Stevie Ray Vaughan are maybe a little tired , maybe the late Jeff Healey is a little closer to it -another young guy who fused blues with rock & like Joe Bonnamassa , & possessed a sandblasted voice which complemented his prowess on the fretboard. By the way , can't wait for the live album!
