Great Pop - By: Shorty11857, 06 May 2008
The first thing I noticed about this album was how much poppier it was than her debut, but that's not a bad thing. Sure there will be those who cry sell-out with this album but that couldn't be further from the truth. KT manages to go full on pop & keep what made her great.
The album takes a while to get going with "Little Favours" & "If Only" managing to sound decent-good but without sounding special & seem slightly uninspired. The next track "White Bird" shows KT has not lost her way but again it is only a good song, nothing special at all.
The album finally comes into its own with "Funnyman" a brilliant pop songs which I loved from first listen, "Hold On" (the album's first single) is similarin that it's incredibly catchy & brilliant. "Hopeless" & "I Don't Want You Now" are great tracks not as good as the preceding two but they grow on me more & more with every listen. "Saving My Face" is another brilliant fast pop song that I loved at first listen.
"Beauty Of Uncertainty" shows that KT can still write great, beautiful, slow songs & "Someday Soon" again strengthens this fact. "Paper Aeroplane" is a nice end to the album, a good (but not great) slow-paced song.
Overall, I'd give this album a 4/5, at its best it's brilliant pop at its worst it is decent & sounding slightly uninspired, but there are no bad songs on the album & it is well worth picking up.
I have just one thing to complain about, the fact that "Journey" was a mere b-side, the song is easily better than half the album & really should be on it but at least it was released.
Subtle and deep - By: C. Walford, 25 Apr 2008
When I first heard Eye of the Telescope half the tracks immediately appealed to me but after playing it a few times I found, if anything I liked the sublteties & depth of the tracks that did not orignally catch the ear. The same can be said for Drastic Fantastic. Its a different sound from ETT & this might put you off if you expect more of the same. Play the tracks a few times however & that depth of music & lyrics come through again. There is no doubt that KTT is a very special musician & the more you listen to her music, the more you get out of it. An excellent disc.
Trouser Wobbler - By: C. N. Sandford, 29 Feb 2008
What a honey KT Tunstall is. Nevermind the music, I just want to have her babies. I mean, I want her to have mine & ...errrmm, if she er.. if she wants to that is. Yes, if she wants to then... I.. don't.. really.. mind. Errr..... Hmmm.
Terrible title, good album - By: A. Sweeney, 17 Feb 2008
Firstly, can I just say what an awful title for an album Drastic Fantastic is? Thank you. OK, now I've got that out of the way, it only seems fair that I discuss KT's follow-up to her drastically fantastic (sorry!) 'Eye To The Telescope'.
Her debut was such a strong body of work that it was always going to be difficult replicating the success of a debut so longin the making & coming up with another set of songs as strong as those she had been composing & performing for a number of years. Disappointingly, if maybe a little predictably, this album isn't as good as 'Eye To The Telescope', but given the quality of the songs on her first album, it may have been a bit of a steep ask.
This is, however, a very good album indeed & does more than enough to establish KT as an artist whose third album will be anticipated perhaps nearly as much as this one. 'Drastic Fantastic' is full of rich melodies, some wonderful harmonies & has a slightly harder edge than her previous work. Some critics declared it overproduced, but if you compare it with the the majority of work on the contemporary charts, that claim is almost laughable.
This is an enjoyable rock/pop/folk album with a handful of very good tracks, namely 'Little Favours', 'If Only', 'Funnyman', 'Hold On', 'Hopeless' & 'Paper Aeroplane' even if there is nothing on this album that could be hailed as a genuine classic. This is an album that, if you found it at a bargain price, you'd probably be extremely pleased with it, but anyone expecting an album just as good as her highly rated debut may find themselves a little deflated.
From strength to strength - By: Kieran Cooper, 07 Feb 2008
KT Tunstall is a wonderful talent. She has been compared to Katie Melua & others, but these comparisons aren't really fair. She has a style very much her own & it is showcased beautifully on this album. She has a wonderful voice which makes her material instantly recognisable. This third album features even more classy songwriting.
I have listened to this album from start to finish more times than I can rememeber & I still can't get bored of it. The production is beautiful & really makes the songs feel full of energy & life. "White Bird" is a glorious acoustic number, with delicate vocals. Opener "Little Favours" is a great way to start any record, while "Hopeless" is wonderful little self-deprecating track with nice lyrics & a melody that will stickin your head for days afterwards.
If you get a chance, see herin concert as well. She is an incredible performer & her material really comes to lifein a live setting.
