Stunning - By: FM, 06 Aug 2007
People who have bought & like the new Brett solo album will love this 5 track CD. "Back to you" - the first track - isn't on the album & is brilliant. The other four tracks appear on the solo album, but are acoustic versions on this CD. "Ebony" sounds better here than it does on the solo album. The other tracks: "Infinite Kiss" - one of the highlights of the solo album, is absolutely stunning here too (lovely lyrics); "Love is Dead" - gorgeous; "Song for my Father" - very moving lyrics. I have become obsessed with Brett again thanks to this album / his new music - let's hope there is lots more to follow from himin this current, new style. A whole acoustic album would be great - or a collection of the tracks he performed for the live "You Tube" series.
Back To You...AGAIN! - By: Jamie Wilson, 07 Jul 2007
I feel that I should start off by saying that I am an enormous fan of Suede & The Tears (of course). I not only have all the records but every B-Side that both bands ever released (along with most of the fanclub only rarities). I even have a lot of my Suede & Tears singles on both vinyl & CD. Needless to say I am fanatical about all of that material.
I must say though, that although I own everything Brett has released as a member od Suede, The Tears & as a solo artist, I find myself only loving HALF of what he has released as a solo artist. But even though I say "half," it definitely includes his new single, "Back To You."
I have been waiting for Pleasure to release the "Back To You" singlein the rest of the world for months now. "Back To You" was releasedin Scandinavia as a singlein the Spring but, was unavailable elsewhere until now...sort of...
This re-recording of "Back to You" just isn't the same. The quality of production just isn't there. If you have already heard the original version (off the record Pleasure 2 by Pleasure) this version sounds exactly like what it is...re-recorded. The original really would have been a fantastic edition to the self titled debut, "Brett Anderson." This, was of course clearly noticed as a mistake, otherwise Brett Anderson & his label wouldn't have bothered to release the follow-up to the "Love Is Dead" single with a song that doesn't accompany it on the proper record.
The one thing I don't understand at all with this single is why the fact that there aren't the proper "previously unreleased tracks" that usually are a given with Brett's singles. Instead, we are given 4 live tracks... which isn't a bad thing but really isn't a good thing either. Clearly, Brett must have had songs slated as the "B-Sides" of the singles that were originally to follow the first single. Where are they? Brett has already released a live double album that is comlete with acoustic renditions of some of the songs from his self-titled debut. I would think that it is very clear by now that fans of Suede & The Tears have come to expect exceptional "previously unreleased" B-Sides. I'm sure Suede are the ONLY band EVER to have done a B-Side only gig. The only other band that comes to mind that could get away with that are The Smiths.
And, although it seemed Brett's intial expectations of his solo work were high, I think it may now be clearly obvious, that he must do something drastically differentin the future if he is to stay afloat as a working artist. That is, as an artist that is beloved & widely listened to as he wasin the past. Unfortunately I do think this seemingly giant dropin his fame & popularity maybe necessary if he is to fully appreciate just how good he had it just a few years ago.
Forget the A side, but the acoustic tracks are great! - By: The Sad One, 28 Jun 2007
This is odd. When "Back to You" was first heard it was stripped down to just vocals & piano & shownin Anderson's slightly bizarre You Tube series of performances prior to the release of the dissapointing solo effort "Brett Anderson".
At this point Anderson commented that "Back to You", like the other material on his solo album, was co written with producer Fred Ball. He added that it would not be on his solo album, but a version would be on Fred Ball's "Pleasure 2" album. Whoops. Looks like Brett chose the wrong song to throw away.
The version which appeared on Pleasure's "Pleasure 2" was easily the highlight of that record, & when Anderson's own album was released it was clear that the lack of "Back to You" had left a bit of a wholein the record.
So here we are. Rather than release the tedious "One Lazy Morning" as a second single from his album, Anderson has plumped for a re-recorded version of "Back to You". Gone is Fred Ball's fun 80's production & the saxophone (which was great) &in is a dull rendition of the song which threatens to sound like Nickelback. Oh dear.
What is great though, thankfully, are the acoustic reworkings of some album tracks & "Love is Dead". Not wholly scruffy, there's some glossy backing vocals, & it highlights the fact that Anderson really should have had the confidence to do the album this wayin the first place. Standouts are "The Infinite Kiss" which, a few dodgy lyrics aside, is much better after shedding a few thousand backing vocals that clogged up the album version. "Love is Dead" too is lightened up a bit, losing the string loop adds to its fragility, & "Ebony" is turned into a bitter sweet lullaby, rather than an indie retread.
It is interesting to note that Anderson also seems to finally have given up the dream of scoring another top five singlein his career. This five track EP is not chart eligable, so it would appear to be for the fans only. Good move Brett!
