Outstanding - By: J. Gander, 01 Jan 2007
I bought this album after seeing him on Later with Jools. He is spectacular! Ben (former member of Crash Test Dummies) is a "one man band" of the highest quality. I haven't had an oppourtunity to see him live, but some of these tracks give you an insight into how it would be. Recommended to all music lovers!
Best album of the year? - By: Harry Stag, 22 Mar 2006
This album is one of the most startling out there at the movement. Son of Dave (real name B. Darvil, according to the back of the album cover) plays harmonica & sings, but also takes up the space normally held by the rythm section, stamping grunting & humming to create a brilliantly hypnotic backing. This isn't hip-hop style human beatbox, but a really inventive accompaniment. The songs reveal Son of Dave influences: there are some great blues covers, Rollin' & Tumblin', Mannish Boy, & a particularly a superb interpretation of Crossroad Blues. San Francisco is a relaxing change of pace, & he's joined by Martina Topley Bird for the excellent Devil Take My Soul. The great thing about this album is the combination of old & new styles. Truly fantastic listening.
