Disappointed - By: Midimood, 24 Aug 2008
I have to agree with the reviewer "El Burrito" here. I too have been trying to understand "what all the fuss is about". I have been searching for something catchy about this album but am struggling to find it. The first track Northern Swing is a promising number howeverin my opinion none of the other tracks live up to it. Generally speaking I find that if an album such as 'Turntable Soul Music' has been reviewed twelve times on Amazon, eleven of which have favorable reviews that this is usually a good indicator to whether an album is worth buying or not. Howeverin this case I'm guessing all the favorable reviews came from mates of the band or such like....?
Invest in this - By: katty, 30 Mar 2008
I bought this Album towards the end of last year. The amount I've played it, you'd think I should be done with it. I'm not. Instead I find myself constantly fishing it out to listen to at home,in the car, to my friends. Everytime its onin company, someone inevitably asks me who it is. Northern Girls is a great track, but I'm happy to let the CD just play, & (almost) never feel the urge to skip forward. If you like Ben Westbeech, Little Dragon, Erykah Badu, Lamb, this is a definite must. Don't be put of if you have never heard them before, the album is instantly likeable -but not unintelligent.
Six months after buying unearthing this treasure, I'm still finding it difficult to to top it despite my insatiable music habit. Basically, put it at the top of your wishlist,
Tip top album - By: ragnumpiza, 08 Mar 2008
One of my favourite albums of the year. Fat funky fresh & full of fantastic music & swelling vocals. "Alice" is just a classic if ever there was. Downtempo without getting bland , can't recommend it enough.
Drab early nineties rehash - By: David Johnson, 29 Nov 2007
After giving this a good half a dozen listens & placing my trustin the other reviewers on this page I have to say that I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. We've been down the female vocalist, one guy on the turntables, another on the guitar road plenty times before. Turntable Soul Music is a very apt description of what Belleruche do - it's gentle, polished & unlikely to cause offense - it all adds up to a pretty tame listen.
"Northern Girls," kicks off the record with an energetic driving beat. Is it me, or can you not hear singer Katrin DeBoer's voice if you turn this up loud? It seems lost somewherein the mix. I find the singing on this frail & pretty unremarkable, lacking the astonishing purity of a Skye Edwards, or the battered, haunting quality of Beth Gibbins. It's a play it safe voice - lackingin subtlety or raw emotional power.
The tracks on this that really stand out are, "Minor Swing," with its infectious bouncing trombone driven rhythm - very good, awoke me from my slumber - & the gentle, wispy laments of,"Reflection,"and,"13:6:35."
The rest is a largely drab set of passable tunes, a style rehashed from the early nineties for those who missed the boat the first time round.
Breathing new(ish) life into t**p-h*p - By: T. Hawkins, 08 Oct 2007
If you took Portishead, Mr. Scruff, Roisin Murphy, the Cinematic Orchestra & maybe a quarter each of Sia, Helicopter Girl & Erykah Badu, chopped them into little bits, put the bits into a bag & pulled them out one by one until you had enough to make a new band with, one of the possible random combinations would be Belleruche. Which is no bad thing, because if their music isn't exactly groundbreaking it certainly is well-crafted, engaging, intelligent & listenable. Not every track is quite as memorable as it should be but every debut is allowed its flaws & these don't standin the way of some excellent & characterful music. At their best Belleruche ably stand comparison with any of the artists listed above & I'll be keenly watching to see what they do next.
