Missold - By: Jonathan D. Matthews, 10 Feb 2010
I took a gamble buying this & it didn't pay off. It is not funky exceptin the original sense, i.e. it stinks! There was one track I half-liked. No wonder there's no preview samples available.
My wife is Brazilian & she hates it too!
I'll try & get a refund for mis-selling under the trades description act.
I have a load of other Latin & Brazilian stuff i like fine, but don't buy this.
Funky Stuff - By: pjr, 23 Dec 2009
There are a plethora of compilations of Brasilian music many of varying quality. How good this one is may depend on your idea of what the music of Brasil actually is. If you're looking for the frentic high speed samba rhythms most associated with the carnivals of Rio then you'll be disappointed this collection. What you get here is a little more, well, funky.
The timescale covers the period when a new generation of musicians came into promenence throuough the MBP movement. These musicians took the traditional music of Brasil & fused it with the modern sounds of Western popular music to create something distinctively Brasilian which would encourage young Brasilians to buy somehting other than The Beatles. Yet it wasn't just the pyschedelic sounds which were embraced & absorbed. For every Beatles fan it seems there were those who wanted to add something akin to James Brown or Sly & The Family Stone. The results of these fusions are found on Patrick Forge's rather excellent compliataion.
Whether or not you can dance to this stuff doesn't matter as you get some irresistible grooves & some extraordinaryly wonderful songs. Highlights include the wonderful "Nereci" by Djavan & Mariazinha & two tracks from Doris Montiero which, although quite different, are exceptionally rewarding. The funk here is more of the breakbeat kind & this is the sort of compilation which might appeal as much to those looking for a good break as much as anything else. Including MBP legends Elis Regina & Marcos Valle - whose "Garra" is my highlight of the entire set - gives some star quality too. Some of the tracks feel more rootedin the 60's than the set may imply, yet it's a wonderful set.
I've a good number of discs from Brasil but this is one I do find myself going back to. Played back to back it does sometimes fade out of your consiousness yet there each track does have its own rewards. If you're looking for introduction to the music of Brasil there are better guides (try the David Byrne compilied compilations of Luka Bop, for starters) but this is a worthy addition to a collection as it does contain at least 5 absolute killers & good number of other rather wonderful tracks. You may not be able to go absolutely wild on the dancefloor, but it's pretty funky stuff all the same.
Not bad, but not that funky - By: Charlie B, 07 Oct 2009
I have come to really enjoy some of the tracks on here, but I feel it's a little bit misnamed. It just ain't that funky. If it had said the "Brazilian Jazz experience" or the "Bossa Nova experience", I probably would have been pleasantly surprised by how groovy some of the tunes are. As it is, I was happy, but not over the moon. Still like Pat Forge though!
Brazilian Funk CD - By: Ms. Anna Dobrolioubova, 09 Jun 2009
To be honest, I expected a little bit more from this CD. May be a bit more up-tempo? Chose a couple of songs for my party CD mix, but other than that, was a bit dissappointed. More for listening, than dancing to.
