amazing - By: W. A. Davies, 21 Mar 2008
This is the most thrilling, exciting sound I have heardin ages. What amazing talent & energy! I cannot stop playing it night or day, it is so uplifting.
Even when I am not playing it, the rhythms & melodies keep coming into my head & I find myself nodding, tapping my feet or drumming with my fingersin tempo. The sound qualityin general is absolutely superb, however, can anyone explain the small blip of interference between track 2 & 3 ? It only lasts a few seconds but I think this couple deserve perfectionin the recording of their performance. I was also a little disappointedin the quality of the DVD production.
In spite of these criticisms I heartily recommend this album & still give it five stars!
This is definitely not Flamenco! - By: David Johnson, 17 Jan 2008
Rodrigo & Gabriela's self-titled album is lightening, sparky, edge-of-your- seat stuff from the first track to the very last.
Tamacum sets the tone of the album: building tracks from simple chords into multi-layered sprawling showpieces. No expense is sparedin this tour de force of acoustic dexterity. Just read the inlay card - every song has a reason, a story.
Rodrigo & Gabriela, spited by rejection from Mexico's top music schools, are deeply influenced by heavy metal bands like Metallica - & it shows, but my favourite tracks on the album are the languid, poignant Saturi & Ixtapa (love the fiddles.)
There is indeed so much panache & spirit going through this - unlike so many acoustic albums there is never a dull moment - the winding intros are just a breath of fresh air but these two have some bite. As we are reminded on the back - We don't play Flamenco.
Blown Away - By: Andrew McConnell, 11 Dec 2007
I have never reviewed anything on Amazon before but felt compelled to write about these guys. 2 months ago I had never heard of them, butin the space of 2 hours one evening I discovered their version of Stairway to Heaven, bought AND downloaded the album & purchased concert tickets for them. On Sunday night I saw them at the Hammersmith Apollo & was blown away.
As good as the album is it cannot convey the sheer intensity & energy of their music. They had a packed audience eating out of their hands from the first track. A minimalist version of Floyds 'Wish You Were Here' (not on the album) with the crowd roaring the lyrics was thrilling. Some tracks literally built the tension inside me until the glorious final release of energy. Positively orgasmic.
I went with a sceptical friend, who is a music producer & couldn't stop raving about them afterwards. But then I can't imagine anyone not being excited about the talent, muscianship, exuberance & energy of RodGab.
Nice album for the summer! - By: Yovra, 29 Oct 2007
In this era of samples & electronic sounds it's nice to hear some decent acoustic sounds! These two can play! It's very song-based; so the solo's are to-the-point.
I don't think this has much to do with flamenco (I hear quite a few camparisons with that music), more with Santana & Al di Meola.
(If you like this album, try some stuff by Paco de Lucia or the Guitar Trio)
Rodrigo Y Gabriela - By: Spider Monkey, 20 Oct 2007
This is an outstanding album. I first heard this whilst drivingin my uncles car & fellin love straight away. The interplay of the two guitars & the percussive playing are simply incredible. This album is worth it for the first two tracks alone, they are so upbeat & uplifting that you can't help but tap your feet & hands & smile stupidly every time you put the CD on. Considering you get the additional tracks you really feel as if you're being spoiled. Their version of Metallica's 'Orion' is simply brilliant. The only problem with their music is once you hear it you won't be able to get it off of your music system. I feel this is slightly better than their other album 'Re-Foc' which feels more jazzy, & this album comes highly recommended indeed. One word of warning, check out the UK version, it's exactly the same but cheaper!
