I had been meaning to get this one for a while, & was finally moved to action by the sad death of lead singer Levi Stubbs on 18 October.
What a terrific set. Once again I cannot understand how they left music like thisin the can for so long. Levi was a natural baritone, & a very good one at that. The producers at Motown got him singing tenor, above his normal range to give an edge to his voice & an emotional urgency that worked on hit after hit.
His voice, those harmonies from the guys, & that magical music from The Funk Brothers is a hypnotic blend for me. The stand-out track for me after a couple of plays is 'My Fatherlesss Son'. Sure it is contrived & melodramatic & uses every trickin the book to tug on your heart strings. It works on me!
The set comes with extensive notes & some great photographs, some I had not seen before. I am grateful to Hip-o Select for releasing this.
absolutely brilliant! - By: White Rose, 13 Sep 2008 what stunning tracks! To think these never saw light of day! I kept thinking 'this would have made a great single' 'this would have been a superb album track' & so on, all through the two CDs. I have been playing & playing them, not getting tired of the different songs, the different arrangements - all with that superb & unique Four Tops sound. I cannot believe these gems have been hidden for so long & am very grateful they are at last available for us to buy & love.
where have they been hiding these gems? - By: Dg Truby, 05 Aug 2008 I received this from Amazon yesterday I was astounded as I only ordered it Saturday Night. What Service. This album is absolutely Brilliant & miles better than any of their albums after 1966. I can not recommend it more highly than give it 5 stars. Levi's voice is spellbinding as ever. I cannot believe this had been hiddenin the vaults all this time. If you love The Four Tops on Motown you will love this. I cannot wait till Spellbound by Martha & the Vandellas comes into Stock at Amazon if it is half as good as this.
