Gold and Gold - By: N. Darwen, 03 Jan 2008
The late Prince Far I was dubbed `the voice of thunder' & often likened to a fire & brimstone Old Testament prophet descending from the mountain - which was perfect!
This is dread, dread music, intonedin a big, deep voice by the dee-jay. He has long been a favourite, & to hear these obscure sides gathered together is a true joy.
The earliest title is a reworking of the Slickers' `Johnny Too Bad' for Syd Bucknor entitled `Johnny Get Worse', released only on a white label, but already Far I's style is instantly recognisable. Two Enos McLeod productions for Soul Beat & several sides for Micron follow, then material from Far I's own `Cry Tuff' label & finally sides from the UK label HitRun. The sounds are exemplary throughout, & variation is added by the presence of a couple of Far I's productions on singer Errol Holt.
In short, essential listening for anyone interestedin seventies roots, & as lovingly presented as only Blood & Fire know how. Buy it!
