A good introduction to Dolly's music - By: Peter Durward Harris, 15 Oct 2003
To anybody who already owns a compilation of Dolly's music for RCA, the track listing here has a familiar look to it with few exceptions. The exceptions are Please don't stop loving me, a sensational duet with Porter Wagoner not normally included on Dolly's solo compilations, To know him is to love him, from the first Trio album, & Why'd you comein here looking like that, from Dolly's period with Columbia. This UK edition includes a bonus track – a remix of Early morning breeze, a song that originally appeared on Dolly's Coat of many colors album (1971) & later on her Jolene album (1974).
The other tracks here include many Dolly classics, notably Jolene (her only UK top ten solo hit), Islandsin the stream (a duet with Kenny Rogers that became a USA number one pop hit & UK top ten hit), Here you come again (a USA top three pop hit), Coat of many colors (Dolly's autobiographical signature song – the only song here that didn't reach number one on the USA country chart, peaking at number four), Bargain store (which some radio stations thought too risqué), 9 to 5 (a USA number one pop hit), It's all wrong but it's all right (much more risqué than Bargain store) & Love is like a butterfly (one of Dolly's finest romantic songs).
This is among the best single CD collections of Dolly's music, though there is a 25-track CD titled (confusingly) Ultimate collection which I slightly prefer & which I've already reviewed. I recommend that you compare these collections & decide which suits you best.
Possibly her best greatest hits compilation to date - By: , 10 Oct 2003
Dolly is an icon & there are not enough words to describe her legendary body of work. In addition there are quite a few greatest hits compilations round but this is almost certainly (in my opinion!) the best one as it contains all the classics & one or two less well known tracks. They all show just how talented a singer & song writer she is.
There is no-one else round quite like her & this collection proves that. Excellent pictures inside the cd booklet are merely the icing on the cake.
