The Jimi Hendrix starter pack - By: Ian Williams, 12 Jun 2010
This isn't all the Jimi Hendrix you'll need but it is the best place to start listening. If you don't like this then you just won't like anything else he's done. Hard to believe but there are some people who don't like Jimi Hendrix but then they probably don't like rock & blues electric guitar anyway.
Forty years after his death & he is still the most amazing blues & rock guitarist who ever lived & his influence is still being felt & all thatin a tragically cut short four year career. Anything before Are You Experienced was basically his apprenticeship when he was learning his craft. After that he exploded.
As an introduction to Hendrix this can't be beaten, though it can be argued that various alternate takes of famous tracks which, while attractive to the hardcore fan, do the official versions (i.e. those that appeared on his albums) a disservice. I certainly prefer the original All Along The Watchtower to the alternate take which appears here. That said, CD1 can't be faulted as a comprehensive selection of his studio work.
CD2 is a sampler of the many live recordings which have been released since his death. There's no doubt that Hendrix was brilliant live. Rougher is undeniable & understandable as his studio material was meticulously put together. There are only two live versions of tracks on the first CD and, like the rest, are noticeably longer with a whole lot more energy. Hendrix was as good live as he wasin the studio, justin a different way.
After this, the only way to go is to his official studio albums & after that divein to the plethora of live albums. Me, I rather like the compilation Blues which, surprise, focuses on his bluesier side. Me, I'd like a Blues vol.2 but sadly there's no sign of one.
I must mention the brief but fine liner notes & reasonably detailed track listing.
So, here you are: an excellent introduction to one of the greatest rock artists of all time. How can you resist?
Voodoo Child - By: Jumbo, 14 Mar 2010
Classic Hendrix - what more can I say, no music collection is complete without it.
Review of "Voodoo Child", the Hendrix compilation. - By: E. Marks, 31 Aug 2009
I don't think I can add anything to the acres of opinion about Jimi Hendrix published over the years. If you aren't familiar with his ground-breaking guitar style, then this CD is the ideal introduction. If you do know & love his work then this may fillin a few gapsin your collection. I suspect that some of the singles tracks on this collection have been edited to fit them all in, but it still gives you the essence of the music. It's difficult to get across to the current generation what a huge impact Hendrix made on the already vibrant music scene of the mid-Sixties. His unique & wild guitar playing was the starting point for the whole of the virtuoso performance-oriented movement which developed through the rest of the decade, providing a platform for bands like Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, etc. So... yes this CD is worth buying.
Voodoo Child - By: Spider Monkey, 28 Dec 2007
I wish I could start by giving this album more stars. As far as a Jimi Hendrix 'best of' goes, you can't do much better than this. One disc of his best known tracks & another of live & rarer music. The two sides to Jimi's music, the polished, yet still powerfully raw studio work & the soaring, imaginative & soul lifting live work. Hendrix was innovative & uniquein his time & listening to his music you are struck again & again by the fact that he is still unsurpassed. His sound has been emulated (often poorly) but never bettered. 'All along the watchtower' & 'Voodoo Chile' start with full force & slap youin the face, where tracks like 'Angel' & 'Little Wing' lull you into his psychedelic, magical patchwork. His guitar sound & wonderful lyrics have the power to move you like nothing else. Yes, I am biased, I love Jimi Hendrix, but you really can't be without himin your music collection & if you don't want the whole catalogue (although after listening to this you soon will) then this album is as good a place to start as any. Give it a go, but be warned, you'll become addicted.
From Revolution to Revelation - By: JayJayDee, 27 Jun 2007
In 1911 Stravinsky stunned the world with Le sacre du printemps.
In 1968 Hendrix stunned the world with Voodoo Child.
We are still recovering.
