Vinyl edition sounds awful!!!! - By: Mike the Fish, 01 Dec 2007
This review is for the vinyl issue of the album. Opinions of lyrical content aside you should be aware that this sounds terrible on vinyl. The second side is about half an hour long & cut far too close to the end of the side. It hasn't got a great tone throughout but side 2 is really really rough. Side 1 doesn't sound especially nice either. Should have been cut on 3 or 4 sides instead.
Looks nice, sounds bad.
Coldplays best 9/10 - By: D. A. Mcculloguh, 20 Aug 2007
More moving that the former & latter this album gives a much more rounded consistant quality between parachutes guitar & piano driven emotion & X&Y's rockier feel. The reason I rate it so highly is simply, every song on here feels different & the album frequently gives me shivers with its raw emotion.
The album opens up with Politik an arena bound protest song pleeding to the G8 about fair trade. Getting lostin the worldlyness of this song is easy & the lyrics feel so wise & true, shaking you towards the end when Chris pleads for 'love over this' bridging very nicely into In My Place's 'come back to me'.
From here all of the well known singles (God put a smile / the scientist / Clocks / In my Place) are squeezed together to make lesser bands produce a one sided album. Especially with the quality of those 4. While Daylight & Greeneyes feel like lowlights onlyin comparison to the former & later parts of the album the touching Warning Sign is guarenteed to pull on the heart strings.
The title track itself has a cold & chilling persona as Chris explains calmly & coldly how he would do anything for his lover 'buy a gun, start a war' A brilliantly unique love song, with a killer chorus & riff.
But its the final moments of the album that provide both the most depressing of songs & coldplays greatest moment of redemption. As human kindness pulls a man back from suicide. As gripping as Running to stand still - U2. It ends the album on a totally uplifting feel.
And there you have it, second only to efforts by Pink Floyd & Radiohead, this is one of the best albums i've ever heard.
Fantastic Album - By: Scarhurzt, 08 Jul 2007
In my experiance Colpdlay is an aquired taste of music. I highly doubt most people will take to this album from the first listen but persevere & you will find yourself enjoying listening to the songs more & more. The reason for this is because Coldplays style is very defined & the mix of bittersweet piano & guitar playing makes for a very distinctive sound. There are beautiful lyrics & truly mindblowing riffsin every songin this album & guess what: there's no filler songs, each one is great & they are carefully designed to give a different feel to the listener. I myself still have trouble catagorising Coldplay's style of music because it is simply not like any other music out there. Nope its not like U2 or Radiohead, though these bands obviously had some influencein the bands style. Songs like "The Scientists", "In My Place" & "Clocks"will be the most recognised but not necessarily everyones favourites: (my personal favourite is "Warning Sign"). I seriously reccommend adding this to your music collection & I am sure that you won't be dissapointed.
