More Gregory less focus - By: bada Bing, 14 Mar 2007
I love this album. I bought the original LP & was excited to buy the remixed CD with the added bonus of the extra wonderful tracks. However, whoever remixed this needs to go back to remixing school. There is no sharpness & the bass just makes my speakers thud. This is a shame because each track is wonderful with Gregory on form with a sweet voice & a hard rythem to match. I also recently bought the remixed Night Nurse CD & this just sparkles through my system.
shame
This album should have been called "Classic Gregory" - By: Rudy, 02 Apr 2004
Gregory Isaacs is unquestionably one of the most important singersin reggae music. Along with other reggae singers such as Toots Hibbert, Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson & Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs must rate as one of the all time great male vocalists from any genre of music. His singing on this album is brilliant. Listening to his singing gives you the impression that he has an effortless control. Smooth, almost lazy sounding, Gregory just glides along with the music.
But it's not just the singing that deserve credit. Gregory also produced & arranged the album, with the exception of one track. The Roots Radics provide the backing on the majority of the album & prove yet again what an outstanding & underrated band they are. On the songs not backed by them, Gregory is accompanied by Sly & Robbie & the Taxi Gang. Not a bad bunch of replacements.
Some of the songs on this album are updated versions of previous material. The Fugitive & Once Ago are examples of this. The standout tracks of the album are Hush Darling, The Fugitive & Once Ago, butin saying this none of the songs are poor. With a good mixture of love songs & reality lyrics this is a well balanced album that blends great vocals with tight backing from a great band. This is also a very accessible album, so people that don't know much about Gregory Isaacs or reggae can enjoy this as well as more hardened listeners. If you like this I would also suggest that you investin a copy of The Best Of Volumes 1 & 2 (Heartbeat record label), Night Nurse, Mr Isaacs (Blood & Fire), Soon Forward & Cool Ruler albums as they are also classics.
