Customer Reviews

for those who like it funky - By: David Johnson, 16 Feb 2007
An awesome thirty five minutes of funky organ. Jimmy McGriff knows how to get things cooking, his full, belligerent style keeps you constantly entertained
"Keep Loose," is just great when Blue Mitchell's swinging trumpet comesin half way through accompanied by the pounding bass of Bob Bushnell.
"Heavyweight," is a more typical Jazz composition but the trumpet really makes the track skip along beautifully. "Think," bounces along; the sax of Danny Turner & McGriff working off each other seamlessly. McGriff delivers a fiery Jimmy Smith style ranging solo on,"Lock it up." "Girl Talk," shows the band are just as adept on more subtle pieces, all instruments moulding together at the end for a barnstorming finish.
This is a hidden gem from The Blue Note rare groove series. What surprised me is the natural fluency that this band seemed to have together. If you like it funky you need to get your hands on this, you won't be disappointed. There's never a dull moment
Superb Album - By: S J Buck, 05 Feb 2007
I agree with the previous reviewer; you can't go wrong with this.
Recordedin 1968 it features the great Hammond Organ playing of Jimmy McGriff with a fantastic band:

Blue Mitchell - Trumpet
Danny Turner - Alto Sax
Fats Theus - Tenor Sax
Bob Ashton - Baritone Sax
Thornel Schwartz - Guitar
Bob Bushell - Electric Bass
Grady Tate or Mel Lewis - Drums

There isn't a bad track on the album, but with the line-up above there isn't as much of McGriff as I'd have liked. The best track for me (after only one listen) is Keep Loose which is 5:54 long. The first 4 mins are just Organ/Bass & drums & McGriff builds up quite a head of steam on this, & onlyin the last minute or so does another soloist get a chance! This is McGriff at his best, hard-driving bluesy Organ playing that just romps along. If your feet don't tap to this you must be dead!
I wish there was a few more tracks like that, some of the others get close but none are quite as exciting.

This is one of my favourite albums!
Pretty uplifting funky laidback sound that Jimmy McGriff does so well.
