original from start to finish - By: , 27 Jun 2002
After having had the pleasure of hearing Guy & the band play tracks from this album at Ronnie Scott's recently, I can only say that the music was fantastic, not to mention very inspirational. Each member of the band plays an equal role & all are excellent musicians.
My favourite tracks would have to be 'Waiting for the delay', 'Underdogs' & most of all 'Soundsin black & white', which, if you have a good imagination (and twenty minutes to spare), you will need to find a comfortable chair to sit in, close your eyes & listen to the story being told.
A great album, & if you can catch the very charming Guy Barker & his group playing live do so, you won't be disappointed.
The Talented Mr Barker - By: , 11 Jun 2002
Guy Barker's Septet's loosely film score related disc is a virtuoso performance by a remarkable group of musicians - Dutch, French & Italian as well as British. It follows his own recent ventures into the medium. From a powerful & evocative reworking of the well known "Nature Dog" to Barker's 25 minute brilliantly original suite, "Soundsin Black & White", the band's high class playing walks a tightrope between showcasing soloists & ensemble playing. The suitein particular, modelled on a 1940's noirish thriller, will be with us a very long time. This is jazz of a high order & deserving of a placein any enthusiast's library.
