This album is gorgeous. Karen Matheson has such a lovely, pure voice, she reminds me of a young Barbara Dickson without all the 'January February' nonsense, & on this album she's got top notch production, songs, & musicians, not to mention the welcome addition of the strings of the BT Scottish Ensemble which give the album a lovely warm glow. This album combines Celtic influences with songs sungin English, some of them written by James Grant, the former Love & Money frontman who also plays guitar very beautifully on the album. Being a non-Celt meself, it's the songs she singsin English which strike the biggest chord with me. 'All the Flowers of the Bough', a haunting minor key song about transcendng life's uncertainties, is one of her finest moments. It beats me why she isn't more famous. Chuck away all your Barbara Dicksons & get our Kaz instead, she's much better!

Sweet Surprise - By: Kenneth J. Mcdonald, 15 Apr 2009
I love the voice of Karen Matheson especially as vocalistin the Scottish traditional folkband Capercaillie. She is particularly adept at her singing of songsin the Gaelic. The work on this album came as a complete surprise & a pleasant one at that. It demonstrates that she has even more facets to her considerable talent. The album seems to improve with each time one plays it. The CD is a fixturein my car essential collection.
A sublime collection of songs! - By: D. Koritsas, 14 May 2002
This is Karen Matheson's second solo work, much more contemporary & laid back than her earlier (and excellent) 'Dreaming Sea' album. Most of the songs here are sungin english, though Matheson's celtic roots are well-representedin the 2 very stirring gaelic language tracks. What marks this collection is the sheer purity, grace & poise of Karen Matheson's singing voice (always a pleasure to listen to - search 'Capercaillie' for more of her work).
Also outstanding is the quality of all the songwriting, especially by James Grant (ex-Love & Money). His songs are always beautifully crafted, & his guitar playing superb. The backing is provided by some very able musicians, Neil Yates' trumpet-playing & the string arrangements by the BT Scottish Ensemble are particularly outstanding.
This second solo album comes 5 years after 'The Dreaming Sea', & is both 'chilled' & emotionally satisfying to listen to. For anyone who enjoys listening to Karen Matheson's fabulous singing voice, this is highly recommended!
