Is Everybody Happy? - You Bet Your Life We Are! - By: Les, 23 Jun 2006
Scaffold were the first "group" I ever became a fan of. While the other 5-year oldsin the playground were singing "Yellow Submarine", I sang "His 'ead went boing!!" (which was, actually "2 Days Monday" - being from up North, & very young, I didn't quite catch the pretend cockney accents!) "Thank U Very Much", "Lily The Pink" & the rest all mingledin with the sounds of my younger growing up days & still make me think of sunshine & terraced houses.
This compilation nicely fillsin the rest of the story about what The Scaffold were. Of course they were always jolly on TV, but there was a more unpredictable, artier side to what they did on record. "Buttons Of Your Mind" is a masterpiece .. a poem really, with a song sort of wrapped around it! "Jelly Covered Cloud" & "1-2-3" seem to be psychedelic parodies & are both among my favourites. "Charity Bubbles" defies description but sounds great. "Today" has a cool modern-jazz flavour about it.
"Goodbat Nightman" is, for me, the ultimate Scaffold song with clever wordplay & a very catchy tune.
Ok, there are some throwaway "b-sides" amongst this lot, but then that's partly what's always appealed to me about the Scaffold - they didn't appear to take themselves too seriously.
If you remember liking the Scaffold ("Do You Remember??"), this'll bring cheer to your life.
Great fun - By: S. J. King, 01 Oct 2004
I enjoy this CD so much I feel sorry for people who don't have a copy! Of course, it depends on your sense of humour. Some of the songs are VERY funny - the one that made me laugh loudest was "Promiscuity" - but of course humour is very subjective, & many people may find them annoying. Besides that, though, the musical quality of the songs is extremely high. Not all are original - my favourite, "Carry On Krow", is "trad." - but all, except perhaps "A Long Strong Black Pudding", are worth listening to. I've learned a number of them by heart & go around annoying my family by singing them loudly while cooking. This is now one of the CDs I listen to most often, along with Norman Greenbaum's best. The only criticism, & this is purely a matter of taste, is that the songs aren'tin my order of preference, & with 26 tracks reprogramming the CD player to sort that out is a big job. Don't let that put you off, though.
Comic sixties pop of variable quality - By: Peter Durward Harris, 10 Oct 2003
The Scaffold, a Liverpool group, were not a serious pop group at all, but they had a few truly brilliant songs. However, their sense of humor & mine are not always the same so there are actually only a few of their songs that I enjoy. I make plenty of use of the skip button when I play Scaffold music – they are uniquein that respect.
Their biggest UK hit was Lily the Pink, a nonsense song about a lady & her medicinal compounds that topped the charts of Christmas 1968. Another huge hit was Thank u very much, a top five UK hit the year before.
My favorite song is Do you remember, which was only a minor hit. It is a song that evokes memories of walksin the countryside (no, it's not a country song, but I'd like to hear a country version of it) & other pleasant times.
Their other great songs include Liver birds (the theme to a TV comedy series of the same title), Gin gan goolie (a minor hit) & a cover of Liverpool Lou. The quality of the other songs varies considerably & how many you like will depend on your sense of humor, although I'll be surprised if you like them all.
The best songs are worth five stars but this is one case where a ten track collection would be better, as long as the best ten tracks are included.
