Is this the benchmark for boxsets in the future? - By: Mr. D. W. Holbrook, 15 Sep 2008
Absolutely the best packaged boxset I have ever seen. An unbelievable amount of time & effort has gone into this. I first heard about this from John Peel via his evening radio one show; he said that "you absolutely must have this boxset". I didn't appreciate why he was enthusing about the packaging & presentation so much - but now I have it I can see why he did! When it originally came out it was far too expensive for me to justify the purchase, but it is now affordable, & for what it is - extraordinary value.
Apart from John Faheys book on Charley Patton, the liner notes are very extensive, & there are many other extrasin the set. The actual packaging of the CDs them selves as 78s is a nice touch too. If you like historical recordings of blues/country/roots, that sort of thing - then I recommend this very highly.
This box set has done Charlie Patton proud! - By: richard2001uk@hotmail.com, 22 Nov 2001
This box set of charlie Patton is long overdue.
I Was amazed at the quality of the CDs, the layout
in fact the whole package. There were some nice touches the first one being the cds made to look like the old 78s.When you open the sleeve you are confronted with John Fahey's marvelous book entitled "Charlie Patton", followed by a 128 page story/discography/lyrics & loads of pictures.
Then follows an 11 page depicting Patton's Paramount 78s with 6 to each page.
After that you are treated to 6 pages of 1929 Paramount ads, my favourite being "High Water Everywhere".
Then comes the business of 7 quality cds made to look like a bunch of 78s. NICE TOUCH THAT ONE !
It was nice to hear Chalie's contempories such as
Son House, Louise Johnson, Bukka White & the like.
All of this has been well thought out, presented & executed on such high quality paper.
I give this six stars out of five !
The burning question I have is will there be any more ? Bessie Smith, Howlin Wolf,Blind Blake,
Ma Rainey are just four who spring to mind & deserve the Charlie Patton Treatment.
