An utter dirge, for the most part... - By: Wordson Canvas, 03 Oct 2009
Having never heard of Rufus, I bought this on the basis of an overheard conversation during a visit to the theatre (the people behind me, who seemed quite sensible, were raving about him), the reviews here on Amazon & a listen to 'Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk' on YouTube. Crikey, what a mistake! Needless to say, 'Cigarettes' is the only half-decent thing on it, with the remainder of the album being a collection of dull songsin search of a tune. The overall sound is greatly depressing - music to play when feeling sorry for yourself, only without decent melodies. Don't touch it.
Want one? I got them all! - By: soreleftfoot, 26 Jan 2009
Sorry Rickey. Wright you ain't!
This is one fine album, & though I like Wainwright's first it's not as good as this one.
Quirky, melodic, thoughtful, tuneful & so different. - this guys a genius.
Poses & `Want one' are classics without a doubt.

A must have - By: R. Findlay, 25 Nov 2007
I simply adore this Album. It was the first of his albums i purchased, because of such good reviewsin music magazines, & it really doesn't disapoint. One of my favorite albums! Buy it!!
A revelation! - By: Aaron, 05 Apr 2006
I am ashamed to say i knew nothing of Rufus until the closing credits of a certain episode of Queer As Folk (U.S.) & was reduced to tears by Poses! I was blown away & haven't recovered yet! I got the album the next day, then the next album, & the next! - & then the DVD... I couldn't get my head around the music or him, & it's that 'unassimilateability' that keeps me hooked. I find him & it to be full of contradictions: he'll write a turn of phrase that makes me think of the Mamas & Papas & then follows it with a phrase of sheer inspiration. He'll write something that i would send backin a GCSE composition but follow it up with utter profundity. (Track 1 starts with utter triviality & becomes a song i'll never forget!) He does things that shouldn't work musically but put a holein your heart.
In short, what a breath of eternally fascinating, honest & touching fresh-air. The colour he brings to my life i would not be without.
If you want to try something new! - By: Julia Martin, 22 Mar 2006
What an unusual album - & all the more refreshing & interesting for it. It's hard to compare it to anything else currently doing the rounds & put me morein mind of 1970s cabaret singers - reminiscent of Billy Joel's Piano Man, with a touch of Jeff Buckley. That's not meant to put you off - Rufus' voice is gorgeous & the opening song, Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk, is a piece of genius.
The album deserves more than one listen - it's not an immediate grabber but it's definitely got potential as a grower.
