Great! Buy it! - By: , 13 Dec 2001
Fantastic music & songs, truly one of ALW's best musicals. The only criticism I can find is the music on the CD differs very slightly on the odd word or two to make it more acceptable, but it's only noticeable if you've actually seen the production. Still brilliant!
Great music.Magnificent,powerful,moving.Listen! - By: , 28 Nov 2001
The words & the music are matched, blended, intertwinned. The lyrical precision is beautiful. The musical direction brilliant!
I was deeply moved each of the 2 times I saw the stage production. It bought back deep memories of the period. Nothing cynical or gratuitous about this production.
One of the most original & exciting things to me since early Berkoff. If you hear a critic charge it as superficial then question that critics integrity.
Its about love, its about youth making out & needing to make a difference. Football? its a metaphor!
If Evita could be a hit this should be a monster & it should be a film!
Typical of ALW music - a little bit "hit and miss" - By: Stephen Macvicar, 07 Aug 2001
I bought the CD a few weeks ago but hadn't actually got round to listening to it until I went to see the show last week. The music is typical of ALW i.e. a little bit "hit & miss" - some excellent songs 'In God's Country', 'Let us Lovein Peace' & I' Don't like You' mixedin with some very average stuff. It is very powerful & emotional but as a "Les Miserables" fan, these are qualities/ingredients which I'm used to & are essential to produce to a top rated dramatic musical.
I would bear with this CD, you may not like it at first but it is more rewarding the more you listen to it.
Andrew Lloyd Webber should have quit years ago! - By: A. Hough, 25 May 2001
2 years ago to be precise. This musical & this pathetic recording do not have the mastery of the other shows. The music often overshadows the important lyrics & they loose their significance. The music is purile & a complete rip off of Riverdance, only something about Andrew Lloyd Webber's rhythm's mean it doesn't quite pull it off. There are only 2 nice songs, the others are very cliche. The most annoying thing about this is the Irish Accents. I'm not anti-Irish, but if you thought the accents were badin Whistle Down The Wind, then you'll simply hate this. The actors are not consistent at all, they will singin English then go into a phony broad irish just to make the lines scan. It's bad, the actors are moderately good at signing, but no where near a patch on the other Andrew Lloyds Webber recordings. Ben Elton, much as I love his work, is not a good lyricist & often the lyrics are cliched. There is a deffinate sense of Elton not wanting to repeat himself. The orchestration is not one thing or another, it's a mix between Riverdance, Phantom & Whistle Down The Wind, it doesn't work. This slushy sentamentalist stuff will be brilliant to sell to Americans, but if you hate that sort of thing don't buy it.
A magnificant new musical. - By: , 25 Jan 2001
THE BEAUTIFUL GAME is a new giant step for musical theater. Ben Elton & Andrew Lloyd Webber has created a wonderful story, with some great lyrics, & fantastic music. "God's own country", "Our kind of love" & "Finale" are ear-hangers, that get's the tearsin your eyes, to wet your chins. This is an exellent example of music & words mingelling togetherin perfect harmony.
