I rate this as sades best album.It hasn't dated at all & is the epitome of cool.One of the smoothest singers makes it seem so effortless & its a perfect record for getting rid of the stresses of the day.Go on, treat yourself,you deserve it.

You know how some music just seems to sound better at certain times of the year or reminds you of good times? This album sounds good all year round whether at the beach, on holiday, relaxing by the barbecue or sittingin front of a roaring fire,glass of red winein hand while the rain batters at the windowsin winter. Sade's voice wraps itself around you & just relaaaax!!!
The title track of the album "Stronger than Pride" is sheer class from THE most under-rated artistin the UK.
Sunset in Paradise - By: , 12 Jan 2003 Sade & her band gave this album a lighter tone than the bluesy "Promise" which preceded it & it has the feel of sandy shores at twilight & the nightlife of palm trees & exotic drinks with flowersin them. It is a lush but spare production of rythms & vocals blending perfectly to create a special atmosphere.
No matter where you are, or what you are doing, once this one is playing you are somewhere else. And it is a good place to be. The flavor on this one is really special & even when it moves from the sandy shores (Love is Stronger Than Pride, Paradise) to the city surrounding it (Keep Looking, Clean Heart) there is no doubt we are still there, only it is night now, & time to reflect.
We get the spanish flavored ballad "Haunt Me" & the longing "I Never Thought I'd See the Day" to mellow us down. But it is getting late & the romance with that girl we met on the beach turnsin another direction. Sade & her band know how to set this mood well & the instumental "Siempre Hay Esperanza" brings our day on the shore to it's perfect completion. It is a song so sexy it was the background music to the famous "supermarket" scenein "Sea of Love" with Pacino & Barkin.
Great rhythms surround Sade's sensual vocalsin this perfect production. Sade knows we don't want to think whenin exotic surroundings, we only want to feel. This effort creates that mood completely. We get to go somewhere else & we don't have to travel. All we have to do is pick this one up, & put it on....

The haunting bass strings of "Paradise" drew me to the music of Sade & encouraged me to buy every album she has done. As a fan you have to wait between 3 & 5 years to hear her new material but like the popular shampoo ad...shes worth it!
The main thyme of this (and many of her other works) is the pursuit of lasting love. The songs are very soulful, highly instrumental, exotic & touch your heart strings a lot. "Love is stronger", the opening track, is very slow & lingering ..tempting the listener to just mellow out. "Paradise" is fast & bassy. "Keep Looking" & "Give it up" again have that recognisable strong bass sound. "I never thought I'd see the day" is , perhaps, the best track on the album.It is a beautifully slow track with gentle background sounds & sad, touching lyrics. It finishes with the wonderful "Siempre hay Esperanza"...("hope"in Spanish).
Overall a terrific album.
