I'm 19, & I love Don Williams. I admit that I didn't hear of him until a few months ago, please don't hate me. I was sittingin ront of the computerin our living room, when I heard some really nice music coming from the kitchen where my mum was. I really like country music, especially Marty Robbins, Dolly Parton, & Lonestar, & I asked her who it was. She replied Don Williams, I went back to the computer, logged on the internet & bought this CD, & his love sogns cd, which really was a comfort when I was going through a bad patch after moving to university. 'Tears of the loney, keep falling all the time, Tears of the lonely never dry.' What a sad song! But it isn't on this cd, so if you want to hear it, you'll have to listen to the love songs cd.
But I reccomend this cd to new fans, who aren't quite sure what to make of him, yet i still think that this cd needs to be at least 4 discs long, because all his songs are great, I have no idea how they managed to pick just 20 of them...
I recall a gypsy woman - By: Peter Durward Harris, 16 Sep 2004 Don Williams, the gentle giant of country music, was very popularin the seventies & eighties. He had many hits on the country chartsin his native America but he scored a surprise UK top twenty pop hit with I recall a gypsy woman, which wasn't even released as a singlein America. So it is that American compilations never include this song while British compilations (of which this is one) always include it. Don only had one other UK hit - You're my best friend, which made the top forty but is actually his most popular songin the UK.
So this collection begins with I recall a gypsy woman & ends with You're my best friend. Between those two classics are some of the best songs that Don ever recorded including Till the rivers all run dry, Some broken hearts never end, Tulsa time, It must be love, I believein you, Stay young & Amanda (a song that Waylon took to the top of the country charts).
Many of these songs were big hits for Donin America but this compilation was released with British buyersin mind - those looking for a comprehensive collection of his American hits should go for the double CD titled Anthology, which I've already reviewed.
This compilation serves as an ideal introduction to Don's music for Brits everywhere, including expatriates livingin America who are wondering where they can find the song that originally got them interestedin Don's music backin the seventies - I recall a gypsy woman.
