Radio Friendly Unit Shifter - By: Mr. S. Bailey, 27 Jun 2010
This pleasant & inoffensive middle-of-the road album, with its famous title track, had undeniable commercial appeal (it was a US No. 1 on its original releasein 1971). Dedicated to Buddy Holly, its style is the style of a certain type of 1970s singer-songwriter like Cat Stevens, James Taylor or Jackson Browne: softly sung songs, with sincerely felt lyrics, & unfussy acoustic guitar work. Only with two of its ten tracks - the elegiac `Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) & the radio-friendly jukebox favourite `American Pie'- does it ever truly distinguish itself.

Don's Greatest Song Is The Title Track. - By: J. Thompson, 21 Jun 2010
I doubt if anyonein the UK had heard of Don McLean until the single American Pie burst on to the scenein 1971, it blew the charts away & as far as I/m concerned, rightly so.
Eight & a half minutes may be too long for some songs, but no wayin this case.

The remainder is a bit of a mixture, with some being frankly non remarkable songs.
However Everybody Loves Me, Baby raises the spirits & Babylon is a far better take on Psalm 137 than Bony M's version.

The 2 bonus songs are from 1992 & add nothing for me, all the same the remastering makes this a one to keep playing for the joy & invention of the title track alone.
American Pie still good - By: A. J. Fraser, 15 May 2010
Hearing this music again on a CD is great. No problem with purchase or delivery.
A Classic Album - By: Paul Stanford, 13 Mar 2008
Lots of people tend to miss out on the depth of this album simply beacuse of the over exposure of the title track.

If that isin fact the case, there are many people missing out on an album full of emotions & songs that will evoke all kinds of memories for each individual listener.

Empty Chairs & 'till tommrow are almost too joyously painful to listen to & Crossroads is a most wonderful creation that stirs past, present & future.

Don't listen to the hype about Don Mclean.

Try him out for yourself & then decide.

I recomend it...
A Classic Album Let Down By Packaging - By: Mr. M. J. Cunliffe, 13 Oct 2007
American Pie is a piece of classic nostalgia to sit back & relax to, or even wind down after a long day. This release of the album is only let down by the cardboard packaging which does not protect the CD sufficiently. With a two & a half year old at home, a plastic CD case would have been far preferable.
