Not defintive, but a good collection of Vee-Jay sides - By: Docendo Discimus, 09 Apr 2004
This is not the "definitive" John Lee Hooker-collection, but it is a good sampler of his classic, band-backed Vee-Jay sides from the fifites & sixties.
Hooker recorded some of his best & most accessible music for Vee-Jay, including "Boom Boom", "Crawlin' King Snake", "This Is Hip", "It Serves Me Right To Suffer", "Dimples", & "I'm Mad Again", & while not everybody will agree with the track selection (Vee-Jay titles like "Maudie", "Old Time Shimmy", "Time Is Marching" & "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" are all missing), this is a really solid compilation. But take a look at Tomato's "The Early Years" vol. 1 & 2 as well if you're looking for band-backed Hook.
