The Masters of Zany Sampling Funk Deliver Again - By: D. F. Beeton, 14 Aug 2000
When Bentley Rhythm Ace unleashed their first CD, "Bentley Rhythm Ace" on the unsuspecting publicin 1997, little could have prepared us for the new territory being charted. Their witty blend of sampled funk loops, quirky sound bites & tub-thumping melodies was quite ahead of the pack at the time. Since then there have been a number of acts who have pushed the boundaries of what can be achieved with a trusty Akai A3000 & a mixer. Most of the artists on the Ninja Record label roster spring to mind as well as artists such as The Full Moon Scientists.
BRA's second release is treading much of the same ground althoughin addition to the speaker-shattering funk loops, they have added touches of latin, jazz & rock. Played at the correct volume (loud) the tracks hit the senses as a torrent of creative imagination & humour. Humour is one of BRA's hallmarks as evidenced at their recent festival gigs & it sits well with the rest of the music.
If one is looking for them to break new ground, this is not the CD to do it but if you need more of their quirky brand of music, then this will satisfy your appetite but I suspect will not stand the test of time as one of the landmarks of sampling history.
