Funky Reggae - By: Mr. D. J. Jackson, 03 Sep 2008
According to the sleeve notes this Lee Perry Production was recorded with Bunny Rugsin 1974 a couple of years before he went on to be a founding member of Third World.
Bunny sings with a 1950/60's soul & R&B vocal style over funky upbeat reggae grooves from the Upsetters. The album features rich backing vocals & suitably grooving horn & organ workouts. Neil Diamond & Bee Gee covers may be a scary prospect to someone deeply into their reggae but honest & talented performances mean that they are pulled off very nicely.
`Kiny Fly' backed by the Chilites is a pure funk outing clearly with Perry at the controls its interesting to note just how much of his personality Perry manages to impart on a non reggae tune. `Big May' puts vocalsin a Jump Blues style over `Return of Django' & is quiet splendid. `Let Love Touch Us Now' is a fantastic upbeat number with an un-credited rousing female backing vocal.
This album is mixedin a somewhat sparse & rough way which allows the basic ingredients of musicianship, vocals, song writing & production to sell themselves on their own merits rather than on gimmicks or tricks. Put another way this album has that early black Ark sound where the instruments are the instruments rather than the studio being the instrument. If you buying this expecting a pure reggae groove you may be disappointed by the heavy funk & soul tinges, but its more likely you'll enjoy it for its groove.
