Not for the casual fan - By: , 18 Sep 2005
I agree that this album is not the band's best. There are so many more fantastic metal albums to buy. It is heavy alright but it lacks either strong melodies or top quality rhythm. The vocal track is over the top & the rest doesn't gel. "Vulgar display" is hugely better. In all honesty I find this album difficult to listen to, making me feel a bit like my old mum - yet I have a collection stuffed with Sabbath, Megadeth, Mettallica, Slayer etc. You will be told to turn this down/off - butin such circumstances it is better to have a sense of incomprehending indignation (as if for example you are playing "Vulgar Display") rather than honest agreement. Not for the casual fan. 3 stars? well it is heavy...
Career peak from the Texan all-stars - By: , 11 Dec 2004
Pantera have never sounded so human. An astonishing album that retains the ferociousness of previous releases but combines it with a new found vulnerability. This particular combination of velocity, groove & pure emotion has never been bettered.
A landmark release.
best metal album of 2000 - By: , 08 May 2004
I think this album is excellent. For people who think Hatebreed & Mudvayne are metal should buy this!. I also think it's one of pantera's heaviest albums. All the song's i like which surprised me because there is song's i dont like on all their other albums. Phil Anselmo is the best metal vocalist around easily. And Dimebag Darrell is amazing on lead guitar. The best 2 tracks on the album are 1}Goddam Electric & 2}I'll cast a shadow. For anyone who like's metal & hasn't heard any pantera should get all their albums because their the best metal band of the last decade. Reinventing the steel was the their last studio album & it proves they stayed metal until the end.
Something missing! - By: , 21 Oct 2001
There does seem to be something not quite up to scratch on this album. Sure, there's still Dimebag's thundering riffs, Phil Anselmo's raging voice & Vinnie Paul's thumping drum rhythms, but this album comes nowhere close to the greatness of Vulgar Display & Far Beyond Driven.
On too many of the songs you can hear the re-emergence & re-hashing of riffs from earlier albums. The whole album exhibits a lack of fresh ideas from the Pantera boys who can do so much better. Revolution Is My Name & maybe one or two other songs show Pantera at their brilliant best.
If you want to get into Pantera's music buy Vulgar Display or Far Beyond Driven, two far superior albums. Perhaps I am being too critical because trying to live up to the quality of the aforementioned albums would have been very difficult.
BUY THIS - By: Mr. Andrew J. Gleeson, 29 Jan 2001
Its Pantera, so don't go expecting anything else. Pantera, along with bands like Slayer continue to make fine heavy music without frills. The whole album will have you rockin' till the finish. Good stuff, go get.
