This has matured nicely - By: DH Dixon, 12 Oct 2008
When we bought thisin the sixties we (pleasantly) thought we had been ripped off, but this record contains perhaps the very best of S&G's songs, including April Come She Will & both versions of the Sound of Silence as well as Scarborough Fair, & there is also some accoustic guitar instrumentals which are worth having, & after forty years, I find the orchestral music great too. There is a particularly nice track with guitar & dark orchestra strings. This is a fine sixties record & I listen to it a great deal. It is delightful.
a mixed CD - By: , 16 May 2003
I must admit to being disapointed by this CD, when I bought it I was under the impression that it was a Simon & Garfunkle album, unfortunatly it's not. About half of the CD is S&G whilst the other half is incidental music from the film. Whilst I have no objection to that sort of music I find that the lternation of fok & foxtrot slightly grating at times.
However where this album is good it is grate. Sound O Silence, Canticle & April comes she will rankin my oppinion amongst Simon & Garfunkle's best, & whilst I found the two incomplete versions of Mrs Robinson anoying at first I am very much warming to them the more I listen to this record.
So overall I find this record to be good value & a good listen, but it is deffinatly slightly flawed.
Hey, SONY-you need to Remaster THE GRADUATE, too... - By: Mark C. Danzig lll, 29 Jul 2002
this album exists on its own termsin reference to the film, & as such deserves the full respect of all the other S&G titles.
It captures & conveys quite well the hopeful, bittersweet mood of the day, as the peace movement was burgeoning, & though the films avoids openly showing the contemporary actions of the era, the mood & energy just reeks thru the narrative;
The 'extended' version of SCARBOROUGH FAIR/CANTICLE is a gemin & of itself, because of the emotional connection it has to the film. Likewise, we have 2 versions of SOUNDS OF SILENCE, & APRIL COME SHE WILL.
There is a stillborn version of MRS ROBINSON, not a song I enjoy, but it is at its correct length for its purpose; A longer version came out later;
Allin all, to complete the LEGACY series, SONY needs to put this out, with any collectable bits that might be lying about;
The sound of silence - By: , 15 Jan 2002
The Graduate is one of my favourite films & I think one of the things that makes this film so good is the soundtrack.
This is a combined soundtrack between three artists, the main songs coming from Simon & Garfunkel, with additional material from a great jazz composer, David Grusin.
Simon & Garfunkel are one of my favourite groups. Their voices compliment each other perfectly & I think that Paul Simon is one of the greatest songwriters of our age. He has an ear for melody & certainly has his finger on the pulse when it comes to making music.
On this album are the classic songs 'The Sound of Silence', 'Scarborough fair', 'April come she will' as well two short versions of 'Mrs Robinson', the full track of the song was recorded at a later date.
David Grusin's partin the soundtrack was to make all the incidental music, such as music for the party & other 'background' music. This soundtrack really shows off his talent for writing songsin different styles, from the fluidity of 'Singleman Party Foxtrot' to the 60's funked-up jazzof 'on the strip'.
Allin all this is one of the best soundtracks ever recorded, it takes you to another time, to a time of flower power, freedom & sexual revolution. A classic book, a classic film & a classic album.
This record isn't quite worth it - By: Kai-Mikael Jää-Aro, 10 Sep 2000
If you are a Simon & Garfunkel completist you may want this record, but really it's apart from a premature version of Mrs Robinson & a few other S&G pieces, it's mostly incidental music by David Grusin.
