A close 2nd to their best album - but still one of the best Metal albums of all time - By: Mr. Ewan Ashford, 31 Aug 2008
Widely thought of now as Metallica's masterpiece............but not by me. Still, this is a terrific album, furious, ferocious & chock full of the huge riffery, solos & downright Metal-ness that, by that pointin time, people expected from the 4 piece. It has a sadness too though that this was Cliff Burton's last album before his untimely death. But for me there is a lingering problem with 'Master' - some of the songs are overlong! I know that sounds silly, but 'Leper Messiah' is the worst example, an overlong jam, with not a lot musically going on, apart from an 11th hour time change that is good, but too little too late. The other is 'Orion' This might offend people because it's been the 'signature' theme to the Metallica videos where footage of Cliff is shown ('Cliff 'Em All'), but is is a boring, repetitive exercise - one that they repeated on the 'Justice' album with 'To Live Is To Die'. But the high points are the awesome opener 'Battery', 'Damage Inc.' & 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)'. It was the album that allowed Metallica to crossover from the underground to the mainstream.
Joint best with Ride The Lightning - By: SideShowBob, 27 Jun 2008
'Master of Puppets' is Metallica's best work as everyone knows. Full of powerful riffs & awesome lyrics. This is what really got Metallica noticed. Tracks:

'Battery': Awesome start to the album. This starts with a great piece of guitar work & then builds into one of Metallica's best known songs. A great riff & a track that is great to play live. 5/5

'Master of Puppets': One of my favourite Metallica tracks. Some may ay this is too long but I think it's just right. Awesome riff, awesome lyrics, & a very good solo partin the middle. Another great track to play live. This has to be played loud. 5/5

'The Thing That Should Not Be': Another awesome riff. No real chorus to this track but some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. Fits this album perfectly. 5/5

'Sanitarium': Like 'Fade To Black', a slower Metallica track but one of their classics. Again, great lyrics & everyone sings to this! 5/5

'Disposable Heroes': This is slightly too long but still an awesome track. Good lyrics, good bass line. 4/5

'Leper Messiah': Another classic. Just brilliant overall. More great lyrics. 5/5

'Orion': Ive never been a big fan of instrumentals but this is good. Some words would be nice but without lyrics its almost relaxing & fits the album & the track list well. 4/5

'Damage Inc.': Great end to the album with more wonderful riffs & lyrics. Not much more to say just awesome. 5/5

I wont say to much as this has been reviewed so many times but simply, if you dont own this album, you dont truly like heavy metal. This is a landmark & has to be owned if you are a metal head. Buy!
Heroes of metal in the 80s! ! ! ! A Classic peice of Thrash Metal! ! ! ! - By: MrMetalheadO'Hagan, 07 Jun 2008
To put this albumin words this album is the definition off Thrash/Metal. When people think of Heavy Metal, they just simply think of screaming vocals & plain simple noise. Which is obviously Bulls**t, as we know there is much much more to Thrash/Metal then noise, this album for example. It shows that Thrash Metal/Metal can be clever to lyrically & musically. This is the album that probably started most Nu - Metal bands like Slipknot, Disturbed & sadly Korn. Here are my thoughts on this one hell off an amazing album.

1. Battery - A fantastic intro, starts of acoustic then goes into a blasting thrash riff which is amazing, the whole song itself is excellent & one of Kirks best solos, this is only the beginning. 10/10

2. Master Of Puppets - One of THE best metal songs EVER considerd by almost ever Heavy Metal fan if you don't like this you shouldn't be listening to this music. This has one of the best mid sections ever, again Kirks solo is amazing, a great live song. 10/10

3. The Thing That Should Not Be - This is great not the best on the album but no less then awesome. Slow & heavy song, Slow verse & heavy chorus, & a great solo aswell. 10/10

4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Similar to "The Thing That Should Not Be" Slow verse & heavy chorus but two completely different song & both amazing. 10/10

5. Disposable Heroes - One of my favourite Metallica songs & the best on this album (besides Master Of Puppets Of Course). Great riffs, awesome vocals, brilliant drumming & the vocals are amazing. Fast & heavy all throughout the song. 10/10

6.Leper Messiah - Awesome song with a great chorus, excellent vocals, great drumming & the whole song is brilliant. 10/10

7. Orion - The instrumental of the album, a fantastic one indeed, the riffs are amazing. 10/10

8. Damage Inc. - Ah this is one awesome album closer, short fast & heavy with great vocals, lyrics, & everything else. 10/10

Overall this is a classic album, this is not just your average Metal album it has something special about something very very creative (I'm not saying metal aint creative because it's one of the most creative musical styles there is but this is amazing).

This is a lessonin Metal aint just braindead idiots making noise with their instruments, it's got intellegence. This is a perfect place to start with the Heavy Metal genre. It's a classic. Simply buy this album then after that buy their new album "Death Magnetic or buy that first" as their both masterpiecesin Metal. Long Live Metallica!!!!!!!!!

It's true... - By: W. Brockbank, 25 May 2008
...that this is Metallica's greatest masterpiece. Personally I'd rate it just a little more that Ride The Lightning, due to its more momentuous moments, although they are both equally fantastic. Master Of Puppets at first scared me. It's dark, forboding & definitely evil. The lyrics to Battery, Welcome Home & The Thing That Should Not Be are incredibly sinister, yet the rest of the songs' lyrics display great meaning. Vocally, Hetfield matured on Puppets & refined his trademark growl! As for the musicianship, it is just phenomenal! Hetfield's rhythms are tight, powerful, punchy & quite simply perfect. Kirk's soloing is magnificent & he conjures some truly memorable licks (*queue the title track's solo*). Cliff's bass playing, notably on Orion & the intro to Damage, Inc. is simply superb & incredibly intuitive. Finally, Lar's drumming is tight & thunderous. If you don't own this album, make sure that you acquire a copy very quickly. In fact I think I shall listen to it myself right now...
