QUEEN II - By: Simon Broadley, 04 Jan 2008
If you know little of this beloved British band beyond their three Greatest Hits albums & the bombast of their Eighties stadium shows, then this extraordinary record may have eluded you. Time to make amends. Queen II is one of the most ambitious, decadent, preposterous & exhilarating encounters between man & recording studioin the history of popular music. 'A Night At The Opera' from 1975 may be more balanced, considered & mature, but for sheer bloody bravado & musical abandon, Queen II takes all comers. It should be part of the national curriculum, awarded the Victoria Cross, shot into space for alternative life forms to marvel at. It's Brian May's favourite Queen album & it will become yours too. Seeing it offered up for mere pounds is nothing short of a crime. Recommending it, my greatest service to you. Oh, & you'll need some headphones...
Becoming my favourite Queen album - By: Mr. M. J. Morris, 27 Nov 2007
Sheer Heart Attack was the first Queen album I heard backin '75 a few months after it had come out. Soon after that came A Night at the Opera & it was a while before I looked back to this album & that was when I was heavily into punk so didn't really get it.
It was only when Mojo magazine did a brilliant article on Queen II a few years ago that I decided to re-invest & I'm so glad I did. You'll read elsewhere that Seven Seas of Rhye seems almost misplaced at the end of this CD & whilst thats true it's more like an encore after the main show. I recommend this album to anyone who's curious but not as a first Queen purchase. I would work backwards from ANATO & then buy Day at the Races.
Startling! - By: JJ, 21 Oct 2007
Considering this was only Queen's second LP (remember, this WAS the early 70's!), the song-writing, playing & production were nothing short of a work of genius!
Dispaying all the ambition which would propel them to their next two great LPs by momentum alone, this is a towering work which should at the top of any Queen fan's wish-list
A great early Queen classic - By: Mr. Jonathan Robin Oxley, 16 Oct 2007
Queen II is the first of the classic 70s Queen albums. The first side (White Side) is written by Brian May (apart from Taylor's Loser In The End) & features the excellent White Queen (As It Began) & the powerful Led Zep-like Father To Son. Some Day One Day is a bit of a hidden treasure as well. Things really start to get interesting on the second (Black) side of the album. Written by Freddie Mercury, all the tracks lead into each other, which, because of the diversity of the tracks, shouldn't work, but does. The March Of The Black Queen is an obvious stand-out but the lighter songs Nevermore & Funny How Love Is are also very impressive. The single Seven Seas Of Rhye is added on at the end & almost seems out of place on the album. Overall though, this is a firm favourite with Queen fans & is well worth purchasing.
my mate told me he thought this album was a bit gay. - By: J. Miller, 19 Jul 2007
This is a great album, & it's not just for queen fans (unlike anything by Queen that follows Hot Space). The first tune, "Procession", is a little masterpiece, like a futuristic classical anthem- lovely stuff. "Father to son" is excellent prog-rock- havent really heard anything like it since, it does go on a bit, but its good enough to hold your attention throughout."Some day one day" is ok- has a nice 70s feel to it- notin a corny way, more of a hippy, folky way. "Loserin the end" is absolute poo- Roger Taylor wasnt the greatest songwriterin the early years(with a few exceptions.). I love "Ogre battle", obviously the harmonies are great, as are the mythical lyrics & the raging guitar solos. "fairy-feller..." is soo gay,yet brilliant- probably the best tune on the album, probably the best Queen tune overall. I love Nevermore- also very gay. I wish it were longer."March of the Black Queen" is soo heavy, it has an excellent blend of heavy rock & operatic vocals- if you like bohemian rhapsody you'll like this & it's less silly. " Funny how love is" is ok, has a nice climax to it- but other than that its just fine. And finally, "Seven seas of Rhye", which is just awesome- I remember singing thisin a Dublin pub last summer with three of the fittest girls ever, & on the "I'll tell you whyyyy..." bitin the middle of the song I managed to get a cheeky squeeze on 1 of their boobs(dont worry, it was consentual)thats why i love it so much. BUY IT........NOW. if you want.
