Motown's Finest Hour in the UK - By: David R. Bishop, 12 Jun 2006
Motown chartbusters Volume 3 was the first compilation album that ever made number 1 on the UK album chart. This happened on St. Valentine's dayin 1970. I know it gladdened hearts then, & it still has that power now! It stayed on the chart for two years. Looking at the track list, it is easy to see why.

As well as the best of 1968/9 Motown like Marvin Gaye's evergreen 'Heard It Thru The Grapevine', & two excellent hits from Stevie Wonder 'For Once In My Life' & 'My Cherie Amour', the album also contains many tracks from a subtle few years earlier, that had been re-releasedin the UK.

In the early/mid 60s, the Motown sound was a bit 'avant garde' for the BBC Light Programme (which was the only pop radio station that there was, unless you could pick up pirate stations), but by the late 60s, it was perfect for the new Radio 1.

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas 'Dancing In The Street' was the record that kicked off the re-release boom. Alan Freeman played it every night for months until they put it back out. The clarion call to dance & be happy was a much bigger hit than it had beenin Britainin 1964.

The magnificant stomping 'Roadrunner' from Junior Walker & The All Stars, 'Get Ready' from The Temptations, 'The Tracks Of My Tears' a timeless classic from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, 'Stop Her On Sight' from Edwin Starr, & the two Isley Brothers tracks 'This Old Heart Of Mine' & 'Behind A Painted Smile' all followed Martha's lead & became bigger British hits on re-release than originally.

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's finest romantic moment 'You're All I Need To Get By' shimmers beautifully out of the grooves, & joins quirky British favorite 'I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose' by Marv Johnson to help make this collection such a classic.

If there are any dud tracks, they would be 'No Matter What Sign You Are' from Diana Ross & The Supremes & 'I'm In A Different World' from The Four Tops. Both acts struggled to find good material following the departure from Motown of the famous writing/production team of Holland Dozier Holland. At least The Supremes are well represented by their duet with The Temptations 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me' & their big hit 'Love Child', which both hinted at a very bright future for Diana Ross.

I heartily recommend this album to anyone with any interestin pop or soul music. This collection made history & still stands the test of time.

What can you say about Motown, Vol 3 is a particular fav of mine but I grew up on a strict diet of motown & nothing will ever come close to itin terms of greatness, every chartbusters volume is a collectable masterpiece own it now.
Volume 3 of 12 looks at 1968 and 1969 - By: Peter Durward Harris, 30 Mar 2005
This is generally regarded as the strongest of the twelve volumes & it's not difficult to see why, although some of the other early volumes are also very strong.

The oldest track here is Dancingin the street (Martha Reeves & the Vandellas), which was only a minor UK hit when first releasedin 1964 but a UK top five hit when re-issuedin 1969.

The set opens with I heard it through the grapevine (Marvin Gaye), one of Motown's biggest hits ever, which made number onein Britain & America when first released & returned to the UK top tenin 1986 following its re-issue after being usedin a TV commercial.

The Isley brothers are not generally remembered for their Motown recordings but they had two UK top five hits with the label. This old heart of mine, a minor UK hitin 1966, made the UK top three when re-issuedin 1968. Rod Stewart covered the song & did almost as well with itin 1975. Behind a painted smile made the UK top five for the Isley brothersin 1969.

Other classics include I'm gonna make you love me (Diana Ross & the Supremes & the Temptations), My Cherie amour, For once on my life (Stevie Wonder), Tracks of my tears (Smokey Robinson & the Miracles), I'll pick a rose for my rose (Marv Johnson) & Get ready (Temptations), all of which made the UK top ten, as well as I'm a road runner (Junior Walker) & You're all I need to get by (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell), both of which made the UK top twenty.

Apart from their collaboration with the Temptations, Diana Ross & the Supremes are represented by Love child & No matter what sign you are - both brilliant though they don't stickin the memory as much as some of their other songs. The same can be said for I'min a different world (Four Tops) & Stop her on sight (Edwin Starr).

I'm not sure if this is my favorite volume but it's definitely a contender. My favorites are the two Isley brothers tracks & Dancingin the street.
