If you love French music you have to have this - By: Mr. P. J. Bamford, 05 Feb 2002
I bought this CD 'blind' about a year & a half ago & barely a week has gone by when I have not played it through at least once - it falls into the category of music that always digs its hooks into you no matter how many times you have listened to it. Most of the songs comes from the era of the likes of Sinatra & Dean Martin, with the backing music orchestral & fantasticin its own right, & coupled with the sort of lyrics you just don't get any more. This collection of 40 songs will take you through all the emotions, laughing at Tu T'Laisses Aller, crying at Non Je N'ai Rien Oublie, Que C'Est Triste Venise (that mandolin!), or being thoroughly uplifted by Emmenez-Moi. Anyone who has seen 'L'Appartement' will recognise 'Le Temps' as the song the two lovers dance to, swoopingin time to the pacy, thrilling tempo. The songs are varied & cover the entire range of Aznavour's recording career, so there is not a single song that does not deserve to be here. I get the feeling that the album compiler had a difficult job deciding what to leave out, rather than scrabbling around to find enough songs to make up a 'Greatest Hits', something that seems to have happened with other artists' collections. If you do not know Aznavour's music but want just one album, this is the one - you really will not regret it, now or ever!
