I couldn't bring myself to give this 5 stars despite feeling it definitely is one of those must have albums. Funky, down-tempo & perfect for lounging & entertaining as its extremely inoffensive to the ears. just downright soothing, will have you horizontalin no time. It's not a perfect album but should bein everyones music collection.
A classic, must-have album - By: E. Ross, 29 Dec 2006
This album outshines smoker's delight. Not so "dub" based & more rhythms. This album is up there with the bestin chill-out grooves. Buy it - you will not be disappointed.
Soulful "Boot" - By: E. A Solinas, 18 Jan 2006
Nightmares on Wax is one of those legendary one-man bands who crop up every now & then (also known as George Evelyn, but that doesn't sound as cool). Even the "merely good" work by people such as he is astounding, inventive & really fun.
And "Carboot Soul," his third album, is no exception: it's an amazing mixture of chillout electronica & acid jazz. It's a bit less hazy than his 1995 "Smoker's Delight," but that isn't surprising -- here Evelyn pulls on various influences to flavour his music. The title fits this album: it's soulful, yet it has as many influences as a "carboot" rummage sale.
It begins on a symphonic notein the epic "Les nuits," which seems to herald a new music direction. Don't be deceived. The symphonic build-up leads to funky grooves & jazzy flavoursin "Morse," which continues to the brassy "Easejimi," the mellow murmurs of "Finer," & the wonderfully peculiar "Argha Noah." Say that last title out loud, & you'll understand the joke.
But there is a slightly more delicate style near the end, when Evelyn switches to the gently rippling guitar of "Firein the Middle," the melancholy acid jazz of "Survival," & the eerier, more symphonic sound of "Capumcap." Evelyn ends the album on a high note, with those sensitive, lower-key songs.
It's hard to find groups as good as Nightmares on Wax -- scour the top hundreds, & you won't find anything like this. I personally found "Carboot Soul"in a tiny hole-in-the-wall music store,in the "used" bin, although it's hard to imagine why anyone would discard an album like this.
Despite the chillout label, Evelyn's music has a sort of relaxed warmth that counterpoints the icy sound of many other bands. He also has a good ear for samples & beats, lacing them with razor-sharp drums & some wonderful brass instrumentation. Sara Winton's rich voice is used well, crooning, "A bottle like a model shipwreck/where did it come from?/Where will it go?/A face without a name/survival..."
"Carboot Soul" is another triumph by Nightmares on Wax, & another wonderful display of George Evelyn's considerable talents. An absolute joy.
Warm and Cool! - By: , 11 Nov 2004
DJ Ease has managed effortlessly to create his own dubbed out Soul/chill style which always manages to create a smile or a slow head bobin appreciative acknowledgement. Carboot Soul is a very fine example of his best original work & every person I meet who enjoys good music has a copy of this beatifully crafted album. 'Les Nuits' kicks us off with its gorgeous string sample & soft bass line, & sets the tone for this cozyin front of the open fire social album that flows through casually from start to finish. There are some more up tempo moments (Ease Jimi being one of my favorite tracks ever!) to keep the momento, but overall, this is one to unwind to. 5*
Leave it for the summer - By: Penny Crayon, 18 Feb 2004
Buy thisin the summer. Buy it then & on those hotter than hot nights when the windows steam up from the heat of you own body even with the air con on & the window open when you're waiting for your body to let you sleep - play it. Play itin the car on the way home from a night out or a trip to the beach. It's for warm eveningsin a British summer. Don't, like I did, buy itin an ugly Northern city on a mild autumn day & try to learn to like it through a drudgy, slushy student winter. It's not as fun.
I'm giving it three stars because outside summer, I don't think it's musically challenging, I don't rate it as anything other than background music & I think perhaps it should only be sold during those two hot monthsin this country. It can be a dull, uninspriring listen, that's all I'm saying. But I can absolutely understand how someone could love it.
