The one Krall album to buy - By: J. Severidt, 16 Dec 2008
I don't mean to spoil this for others. If you like Diana Krall's other albums, you will love this one. If, on the other hand, you don't care much for her stuff (like I don't) - then you might actually like this CD nevertheless. Not much of a point to make, maybe, but here goes:

I don't like Diana Krall as an artist, because she usually seems to be about herself, not the music. I completely disagree with the review provided my Amazon, which states that she is "simply singing songs". On the contrary, her somewhat sappy, predictable emotionality & her small girl's diva attitude quite simply put me off.

That said, this is the one album by her that I have found so far, where she seems to have shed her self-concerned attitude, if not entirely, to an acceptable degree. There are thirteen relaxed songs on the album, with "East of the sun" & "Why should I care" (co-written by Clint Eastwood) standing out. She quickly establishes a mood for each song, demonstrating that she actually has a beautiful voice (and a great command of that voice), if she can for once forget about selling to the pop audience as well. A surprisingly competent & engaging jazz album.

To me, this is the one Diana Krall CD worth having.

3,5 stars. (Should make 4, I know, but I had a point to makein balancing the other reviews.)
Pleasure in a small silver disk - By: AfterTheEvent, 25 Apr 2007
Can't honestly say I'd call DK a jazz artist on this showing but it is an extremely enjoyable album. If it might be termed easy-listening it certainly is easy to listen to. How it is categorized hardly matters it's an incredibly playable album, very well produced, beautifully played. The vocals are delightfully sung, & Miss Krall really can carry emotion & feeling with a tune, by turns, injecting romance, humour, pathos, & wit.

Easy 5 stars.

Beautiful and majestic!! - By: film fan, 21 May 2003
I loved this album from the first time I listened to it. It features some of the greatest songs written like "Let's Face the Music & Dance", "Pick Yourself Up", "I've Got You Under My Skin" & "Let's Fallin Love" along with other beautifully arranged standards. It's as if Diana Krall weaves them & makes them her own conjuring up a delightful album. Diana Krall's dreamy vocals are sensual & just right for these songs. My favourite track is "I'll String Along With You" because it's so dreamyin appearance & her vocals fit it like a glove. A beautifully arranged album that any jazz fan should own. I highly recommend it.
Stunning follow-up to Love scenes - By: Peter Durward Harris, 08 Feb 2003
Diana's previous collection of very romantic love songs had been so successful that the formula was repeated. However, there is nothing formulaic about the quality of this album, which is every bit as good as Love scenes.

Again, the songs were chosen from the Great American songbook. Many of the songs were originally American hitsin the twenties & thirties, including Let's face the music & dance (Fred Astaire), Devil may care (Glenn Miller), Let's fallin love (Eddy Duchin), When I lookin your eyes (Hunter Rodeheaver & Virginia Asher), I've got you under my skin (Ray Noble), I can't give you anything but love (Cliff Edwards, Ben Selvin & Johnny Hamp all had huge hits with it), I'll string along with you (Ted Fio Rito), East of the sun (Tom Coakley), Pick yourself up (Fred Astaire) & Do it again (Paul Whiteman).

Some of these songs, like Let's face the music & dance, were originally more up-tempo, but here they are slowed right down, making them sound fresh & exciting. The original artists are mostly unknown these days - only Glenn Miller & Fred Astaire remain widely recognisable - but Diana & others are doing an excellent job of keeping their music alive & relevant to a modern generation.
